9800GTX or RAM?

Hey all,

To make a long story short(er than it has to be):

I have a friend with an AMD 64-bit 2 core processor, 2GB of DDR2, and some random NVIDIA card. With Windows 32-bit, his computer runs games like SC2, CoD4, HoN on medium to low graphics in medium resolution. Every time he plays APB for about 20 minutes, his GAME will crash, and he will get an out of memory error. I increased his page file and this gave him about 5-10 extra minutes.

My other friend brought over his 9800 GTX, 4GB of DDR2, and 550W PSU for him to try out. We installed everything and in Windows 32-bit, it appeared to have the same issue. However, APB would blue screen now instead of crash, or it would just freeze and require a reboot.

We figured, lets try 64-bit. So we install 64-bit with a fresh reformat and he could play for a longer period of time, maybe 45 minutes, before a crash. He got curious if it was just APB now (it was always ONLY APB that would crash) so he loaded up HoN. After a certain period of time, now HoN crashes as well. Somethings wrong here because that never happened before. Now he gets BSoDs in other games and freezing/BSoDs in APB.

Anyone have a clue what's going on?

Here's my theory to be troubleshooted:

1) The 9800GTX is HUGE in his case. It's actually touching the metal bay where you install hard drives. Matter of fact, I just looked inside again and if it's not touching the hard drive itself, it's so close to it that I can't tell.

2) The errors seem to be like typical RAM errors I would get when I used to play anything on my laptop, but I don't know why it would crash his computer on a consistent basis.

3) Bad PSU leads to intermittent lockups...but not BSoDs?

Anyone?

What video card was he using before? The recent problems sound like a driver issue to me.

try each stick in memtest, also run OCCT on that GPU. Make sure the GPU isnt shorting out by touching anything, put electrical tape over the metal its touching.

We put in the old RAM and for the time being, it seemed to solve his problem of crashing. However, he's back to being down to 30 FPS in APB, though it's actually running (or at least so far).

Could it be the fact that the newer RAM is dual channel? Or perhaps when we installed the larger quantity of RAM, the motherboard used the old RAMs settings?

Should our next step be trying the new RAM one stick at a time? Doesn't memtest require a flash drive or something of the sort?

EDIT: He was using a 9500 GT before.
