Q6600 won't overclock anymore.

Thread Starter
Ok so i've had this for about 2-3 years.

P5k-Premium Black Pearl Edition (LGA 775)
Q6600 2.4 Ghz
4x2GB PC2-6400 (800 Mhz)
750w CoolMaster PSU
1TB 7,200rpm Sata Samsung 16MB Cache
Scythe Mugen 2 Air Cooler
5870 Radeon HD 1GB DDR5 PCIe

Now the thing is, the only thing iv'e changed is the graphics card which is last year's, everything else has been ok.

When i first got this and assembled it, i overclocked it and got it up to 3.7 with the side case open using a conventional fan blowing directly onto the motherboard and it worked fine. Every so often while playing World of Warcraft on max settings, (everything cept the multi-sampling that i left on x1) it would run fine and load faster than another computer in the same room which had same processor/motherboard.

Now the thing is, last year i decided to save on power so i put the settings back to factory default settings making it so it runs back down to 2.4.

I just tried to overclock it with the saved profile and it wouldn't start up. All i got was, the POST startup then it asks whether i want to enter the bios or not by hitting del. I don't so i just let it load, then the monitor turns off, not power-wise, but the screen goes black and the light while is usualy stable is now blinking meaning it's not loading. So now i gotta turn the computer off manualy by holding the power button on the case. After it starts up again, i get the same POST screen, then it beeps 5 times and gives me a message saying "Overclocking failed, blah blah blah" Press F1 to enter BIOS setup or F2 to restore factory defaults then restart.

Now iv'e tried overclocking it even slightly setting the FSB to 300, clock timing at 5-5-5-18, i've even tried increasing the voltage by keeping lower FSB. Yes the multiplier is on 9. Iv'e even youtubed different videos to see what people's settings were with the exact same motherboard and cpu/ram, but still no luck. If i change everything to manual but keep the FSB at 266, it will start, if i set it to factory defaults it will start, but if i try to overclock it, it just doesn't do it anymore.

What's wrong with it? What do i need to do?

Maybe try updating your BIOS? I assume you probably already tried giving it more volts?

Personally I leave my multiplier at 8 to get 3320 mhz. It could also be an issue with the motherboard.

You might also need to leave the ram at stock, my overclock doesn't increase the ram at all.

It might be time for an upgrade. All you would need is a new CPU, MOBO and RAM. But be grateful that it still works at stock to hold you off till you order/get the money for new parts.

make sure you unlink your ram or underclock it, some people accidentally raise the fsb forgetting that it's linked to ram speed, and without looser timings / more volts, you'll quickly surpass your rams limit

try overclocking even 1-2 fsb, shouldn't require anything else to change,

posting your bios settings would help us

Have you bumped NB voltage? Put down all your BIOS settings, maybe we'll see something that was missed.
