That's as bad as a baby boomer luddite using MS Word, then printing out the draft and editing with a pen. Then retyping edit into word... owhh and then printing it as to then FAX it...
Perhaps it's the ethernet cable? does the link light turn off when it fails? At least then you'll now if it's working on the link layer. It could be the BIOS is setting the CPU multi/FSB wrong thus radically overclocking the PCI/PCIe bus. This can cause issues you describe.
