Main OS on slow drive...hurt performance?

Thread Starter
I am running Ubuntu server on a smaller server that is to small (MSI Wind Nettop), and have decided to build an i3 server in a standard case that can house more than 2 drives. The case I purchased (Antec 300) has a 2.5 HDD mount that I thought would be perfect for loading the server OS on. I have a couple of 60GB Seagate 5400.2 hard drives that I could make exact duplicates of so if the drive ever fails it is a simple as swapping it out. My question is, will having the server on this slow drive affect performance? It will only house programs and the main OS, everything else will be on four 1TB WD Black caviars. Should I just install on the caviars with a seperate partition and forget the laptop drives? Thanks for the help!

Depends how often it will need to access those drives, and how much memory it will have spare.
With slow drives, having a lot of memory limits the trouble, as commonly used files will end up cached anyway. If it's just for OS files, and the server won't be doing a lot of stuff with the slow drives, it won't matter a jot.

If this is only being used as a file server then you should be fine if you use the server install of ubuntu and dont use xwindows or any other extra components My last server install was only using something like 15mb of ram for the os. If your using at least 1GB of ram and don't load the os with too much software you will be fine.

The server will have 8 GB of RAM and an i3 G620 proc. I was going looking to install a very light wm (Openbox) for those programs that aren't friendly on the cli. XWindows would hurt with a slow drive? Doesn't that get loaded to the RAM too?

People also run servers with an OS loaded onto a Flash Drive.
Operating Systems don't to be stored on fast hardware, unless you plan to use the features that are included with it a lot.
