HD 558 good impression of 598?

Hiya,
I'm going to check out some headphones in the next hour or so...
I am interested in the 598's but can't find a single shop in town that has them. The closest I have found is the 558 and the 650. Will the 558 give me a good idea of what to expect from the 598?

Also, I read that there is a mod where you remove a piece of tape or something from the 558 that makes them sound more like the 598. Any credibility to that?

Unfortunately, I won't be buying locally as headphones are up to between 1.5 and twice as expensive here in Canada than anywhere in the States. Ex. the 598 are $195 on amazon.com but the same phones from a reputable seller in Canada are $380. Bestbuy has them for $300 but I would have to order them in and I would rather not buy from them.

Input?
TIA.

Here is an excerpt from an article on Headfonia.

Quote:
HD558 (stock) vs HD598 (stock)
■ The HD558 is darker sounding in comparison to the HD598.
■ The HD598 has less low frequency reverb, and while that may make the HD598 slightly thinner sounding on the bottom, the improved clarity and low end texture gives an overall better listening experience.
■ The HD598 has tighter bass.
■ The HD598 has better upper midrange presence, making it more engaging and livelier sounding than the HD558.
■ The HD598 has a more linear frequency transition from bass to upper midrange, while the HD558 has a slight dip on the midrange area.
■ Overall, the HD598 doesn’t really fall into a bright headphone category, but its slightly brighter presentation makes it a better all rounder than the HD558.

Not sure about the HD558 mod.

the 558 mod is not a "sure" mod like the 555 one

it looks like Senn made some adjust to improve the sound quality between 58 and 98

Dang it! I just ordered the 598 for $300! Should I cancel my order and get the 558 for $125 instead?
I'll lose a $25 deposit if I do.

For that much of a price difference, I'd probably say yes.

I want to buy those from futureshop too except I can't get the checkout to work. It says they're in stock in stores but it keeps telling me there's no stock within 200km of my postal code or something.

Exactly this. I tried provinces aside from Alberta. When I tried all cities in Ontario, it turned a result of Belleville having them. They are obviously sold out online, but also most walk in stores as well. To bad. I was going to order a pair, bring in the 598 that I already ordered, decide which to keep then sell the other.

Edit: Are any other phones there anything to write home about? They are really good deals if the product is any good.

That sucks that you guys couldn't get these deals worked out. I snagged the Klipsch S4i for only 44.99+tax so just under 51 bux. I somehow glitched the system and got it for 10 bux cheaper.
