Help get this beast to 1k without destroying it!

Thread Starter
Hello, Im trying to build a new computer with minor-major CPU overclocking in mind. My main plan is to have this computer last me a long time with the only thing needed to be replaced is the videocard.

This build is almost $400 over budget. While I have a feeling of some stuff I could downgrade, I dont know whats the best route without losing much power.

Here is my build:

CPU - Intel Core i7 2600K $314.99

Aftermarket Heatsink -Corsair A70 $49.99

Motherboard - ASUS P8P67 Deluxe $209.99

Memory - G.SKILL Ripjaws 16GB DDR3 1600 $114.99

Videocard - Radeon HD 6970 $369.99

HDD - WD Caviar 1TB $79.99

PSU - Corsair 750TX 750W $119.99

DVD Rom - ASUS DVD Burner $20.99

Case - NZXT Tempest EVO $109.99

Total: $1369.92

So im thinking the PSU might be too much as I dont plan to SLI. I have a 24" Monitor so I will be playing at 1920x1080 or w/e it is. Maybe the CPU cooler is too much? I have heard the 2600K is amazing at overclocking. My goal is pretty much anything over 4Ghz and im happy. Memory might be able to be downgraded to 8GB. is there a huge loss in performance from 16GB to 8GB?

All suggestions are welcome.

Please keep in mind I want to get this build under 1k but dont want to lose a lot of performance.

I'd go with a 2500k for nearly $100 less. For gaming, hyperthreading just burns more power and produces more heat.

And you could easily save $50 and still have a great motherboard also.

The cooler is fine, you could get a +80 or summit, ram wont do your oc any food, so 8 is enoug. Also, your pc will run with 550w psu.

You could definitely bump down the RAM to 8Gb and the mobo down to a p8p67 pro if you don;t want the extra frills. Grab a Spinpoint F3 to save a few bucks there. You could downgrade to a 2500K if you're not using for more than gaming. PSU is a safe wattage, keep it. Could grab a 212+ instead of that A70 and save $20-$30 also, though it's not that great over 4.5Ghz.

Look at this post I just made in another thread.

In short, 2500k, not a deluxe board, 8gb of ram, cheaper 6970 (as you saw newegg is basicly sold out of all models)

Also I don't think you included shipping in your total.

Ah and since you don't plan on another GPU, Antec High Current 620w for just $50 after MIR is nice.

CPU - Intel Core i7 2600K $314.99 change to I5
Motherboard - ASUS P8P67 Deluxe $209.99 Change to ASUS P8P67 Pro
Memory - G.SKILL Ripjaws 16GB DDR3 1600 $114.99 Change to Ripsjaw X 8gigs 1600MHz
HDD - WD Caviar 1TB $79.99 Change to Samsung Spinpoint F3
PSU - Corsair 750TX 750W $119.99 change to xFX Core Edition PRO650W

2500K can be overcloked to 4.5GHz with that cooler.
16gigs ram vs 8gigs ram in game's you will see no difference.
Edit: Ninjaed, guess we think the same way lol.

Go with the 2500k over the 2600k unless you do a lot of video editing and things of that nature.
8 GB of RAM is plenty
ASUS P8P67 PRO is plenty of motherboard for your purpose

+1 for this. You could even go 100W lower on the PSU if it's worth the savings.

Also, if you live near Fry's, you can get 16GB Patriot 1600 for $60 AR.

This what what i was basically going to suggest.

I got the P8P67 Deluxe and I've had nothing but regrets. I wish i just got the pro, I haven't even used any of the Deluxe features yet.

For ram Just get 4GB and upgrade later if your mainly gaming. If your doing video encoding get 8GB there really is no need for 16GB.
