also i would have no clue where to start on how to correct the error. It wont even allow me to do a system restore. I think a reformat and start over with XAMPP and disable UAC before i try to do anything else would be a good idea.

For me the easiest to go was with XP and Apache.Of course I registered a domain name and bought a block of 8 static IP's from Qwest (which allows home hosting) Installed Apache and put the pages you want sceen in htdocs and you are off.I am behind an Untangle box and did have to make some exceptions in the XP Firewall rules but it is a very quick way to get material on the web.Having the Untangle helped with the networking side but it is also possible to setup all (IP,Network IP,Broadcast IP Primairy and secondary DNS off the adsl router provided by Qwest. It does take a little bit of networking knowledge (you do have to know how to get into the router and what options to select) but your friendly Qwest rep. will help out (or they did with me) then I wrote down what to do for the next time.

When you do the networking part in the Untangle box you just set your router to bridge mode.

Don't use XAMPP or LAMP or anything like that for a production website, use Zend, it is much more secure for production sites

it installs php/mysql and everything for you just in a much more secure environment

I was thinking the OP just wanted to throw his work on the Web and give it a look, not make a site that people will visit frequently. For a site that you want to impress people with it always being up,go with "pay for" hosting. For a quick "get it on the web" then host it yourself.I made my own site because I wanted to understand more about all involved,it was and is a great learning experience and not really so expensive compared to other IT hobbies.

I want to be able design the code at home on a closed network. Then I would load it to a paid hosting account.

nope, you would want to run it instead of xampp. for testing a website xampp is fine but if you want it actually connected to the internet and available to the public I would suggest you use zend or install stuff like mysql, php and apache individually so you have tighter security

Thanks but I think you are missing the point of this thread like many people. I am new to coding backend and would like to practice more at home. I've already done plenty of site and have loaded simple HTML/CSS using CPanel. I'm not looking on other ways to improve this other than how to best use my xampp setup in my pc. I've already messed it up once and lost more time in getting everything to work and be secure. Now that being said, how should I proceed with my test server.

I will help but you need to clearly state your goal,I seem to have missed it once already. Very basicaly it appears you want to know how to put information on the web,I ask first,do you have a registered domain?

I'm not looking to put info on the web this way. I want to be able to test php, SQL, Ajax, asp.net on my network so when put it in the web later on it will be right. I want thisto be a learning tool for programming. Where to go from now I'm unclear. I think I need to setup a workgroup and network all my pcs to one another. Also don't know how I should load my files to the web server or where. I just followed the xamp installer and went from there. Joomla works now too. Will get into joomla later on.

Plus I am looking for stuff I can add to my server that will help me later on. I'm not looking for something that will make me have to remove everything
