Question on future Raid.

I will get 2 x 1TB F3 soon and am hoping to put them in raid. Now I hope to put them in Raid 0 with a 2 TB WD green as backup. I have a couple questions that I want to confirm before I get them in Raid.

1. I know most people say that there is a increased chance of failure in Raid 0, but the life of the hard drive would stay the same even without raid?

2. I have read a lot of posts and thread regarding partitions. How is it best to divide the partitions into? Obviously for OS, I do have a couple programs and games I play quite a bit, but one of the things I access the most is pictures. I have around 4-500GB of landscape/nature pictures that I access, check, and edit quite often and plenty of videos.

3. Software controller would be just fine for raid correct?

4. If I decide to get a SSD for OS only, is there any real big advantage regarding it excluding faster boot up?

Might have more questions in time. Thanks to those who answer.

SSD has dramatically increased read/write times for random accesses (such as pictures). If you are worried about failure, you could swap out the 2 tb for 2x1 tb and go raid 0+1, which would provide speed and backup. I would think a software controller should work just fine.

Most digital camera pictures are about 2-8MB in size now - that means a regular HDD performs at very close to maximum efficiency when reading them, and RAID-0 also gives a significant boost.

SSDs are obviously faster, but that's not the scenario I'd choose for demonstrating SSD performance superiority. I would've taken something like opening a web browser, or any sort of multitasking.

For example, copying from drive to drive while burning and opening a program - you'd be able to watch the burning software's buffer drain to zero, and then watch it stall while it refills. With an SSD that's not a problem.

Two should be fine. But if you feel the need to ensure certain things have maximum performance, add another partition and stick it in front.

I usually have ~3 or more partitions. One for OS, one for apps/tools that don't require a reinstall, and one for steam games. Then I have my storage on other drives.

RAID 0+1 requires at least 4 disks. I'd just go with 2 HDDs in RAID 0 and buy a cheap 1.5-2TB drive (internal or external, take your pick) for backup.

RAID 0+1 requires a minimum of four disks, so 4 1TB drives would net you 2TB of usable space. Personally I would choose RAID 1+0 (aka RAID 10) instead.

It's similar to 0+1 (4 disks minimum, half the space is usable) but It's more robust than RAID 0+1 in the event of failure, and is faster at recovering from a degraded state. smile.gif

Yes. If a single drive has a 2% chance of failure, then 2 of them in a raid0 would cause the chance for failure to be 4%. If any one drive fails then all data in the array is lost.

Having a drive in a raid does not increase the individual drive's chance for failure nor does it negatively effect the life of a drive.

I am doing a similar setup. I have a SSD for the boot drive. The SSD will not be part of the raid0. I'm not exactly sure what you are asking.

If you are asking if a SSD is faster booting than a raid0, I would have to reply with, "It depends on the HDDs in the raid0, and how many of them there are."

Example: 4 of those Samsung F3's in a raid0 will result in higher reads/writes than any single SSD on the market right now. At least for sequential. IDK about 4k, would have to bench it.

But my Vertex is definitely faster than 2x F3's in a raid0. More drives in a raid0 means more speed. But the gains drop off after 4-5 drives from what I gather.

I've read up a bit on the 0+1 vs 5 vs 1+0 debate and decided to go with 1+0 because of the points stated in this article. Granted it's old (2007), it still compares 0+1 and 1+0.

Raid 5 is a viable choice as well but in the event that a drive fails it will take a much longer time to get everything back in order compared to 0+1 and 1+0.

I've also heard that Raid 5 was slower in writes due to parity calculations.
