What's the differences between CCFL and LED backlighting?

Thread Starter
I've seen arguments both ways (LEDs offer deeper blacks and longer life with better uniformity while CCFL is better because it's dimming is better and may offer a more natural look). What's the real story?
Thanks.

well. think of CCFL as your standard LCD monitor... cold cathode florescent lamps are used commonly in LCD monitors. so its really just a simple comparison between LCD and LED. LCD monitors will most likely be cheaper from brand to brand for similar products. LED monitors offer increased lifetime as they are more energy efficient. The difference in the backlighting is just how the light portrays the image. LCD uses a "backlight" model and LED used a "sidelight" model. just different ways of getting the image to the screen

LED is just more efficient and makes the product lighter by weight as well.

Hope that answers your question

there's no difference as image quality or colors ( ONLY MARKETING ), the only advantages is the power saving and dimension.

Actually I've found LED LCDs to be more blue-ish than CCFL LCDs. More so with black/dark colors. Whites kind of look 'cooler' than it should too. This is inherent in the design of LEDs. They are unable to produce a natural warm white color.

I've said this before in another LED thread on here, comparing them to GE's new $50 light bulbs. They were having a heck of a time with it, because no matter what they did, they couldn't get any configuration to emit natural-like light. They look like lights in an operating room. They've spent who knows how much money trying to get their $50 per bulb prototype to emit what a $1 incandescent can do easily.

Ive been running an LED (PX2370) and CCFL (2333T) side by side for a few months and would have to agree with the above statement, It's not really noticeable unless i'm viewing darker content. (dark scene in a movie / game etc.) but you can definitely see a blueish tint which does not occur on the CCFL monitor.

The difference in whites is also correct.

The advantages of LED back lighting appears to be more about lower power usage and usually a slimmer design, but image quality wise I would have to still vote for CCFL.

With the exception of very high end LED backlighting (sRGB LEDs/local dimming) LED is marketing hype. Most LED backlighting is done with white LEDs which reproduce a smaller range of the color spectrum. Standard Gamut CCFL can do 72% of the NTSC color space (referred to as sRGB) while white LEDs usually cover 68%. A white LED is typically a blue LED with broad spectrum yellow phosphor to give the impression of white light. White LEDs suffer from blue shifts at higher temperatures. 'Edge lit' can have problems with uniformity, the light must be carried from the edge to the center with a spectral diffuser.

Thanks for the responses. I won't fret too much deciding between an LED or CCFL backlit monitor.

LED makes the hippies and liberals happy cause it kills the planet less but it doesn't produce as good color spektrum that CCFL does unless you spend ALOT.

I haven't noticed any blueish tint on darker stuff on my Asus VS series backlit monitor. Although just recently coming from a CCFL monitor I will concur that the colors are cooler. I actually prefer cooler colors, so it was actually a bonus for me.

As far as blue tint goes it depends on the screen as the cheapest LED LCD's tend to use blue LED's for the backlight for some reason. I know bcos two Acer's listed in my system are the cheapest LED full HD screens that I saw on the market and they definately have the blue tint to them - especially when comparing to the DELL's I have that have significantly better color reproduction. I have tried adjusting the colors but even if you almost totally turn off the blue channel the screen stays with bluish tint.

With the screen with white LED's for backlight you should not see significant difference in color temperature.
