Horrible GPU usage with my ASUS 580... - Page 3

download and install the 270.61, their the most stable drivers for almost any games and I have yet to find someone that complains about it (exception folders). I would recommend using the clean installation method and try the 270.61.

Hmmm ... once you start getting .dll errors when installing drivers, you're probably looking at a pretty complicated solution ... if you can even find one. How arduous would it be to do a fresh windows install?

I just did it yesterday for the first time in like 1.5 years ... my rig is running so nice and snappy now

Successfully moved my 'Users' folder to a different hard drive, too, which I'm really happy about accomplishing 'cause I really hate having stuff on my C: drive that I actually 'care about'.

But I digress ...

Do you maybe have an extra HD laying around you could throw a fresh Windows install onto, just for testing purposes?

No I don't. It's a stock DCii 580. I'm back on the 280 drivers now. I also removed my audio card as I've been having issues all day with it in such as these. I took it out and now I was able to get into my Steam games. Very strange.

I get the .dll error but then the installation continues as normal. It says I'm running the 280 drivers now so I'm not too sure what that error message is referring to. I have 2 HDD's in my machine. The SSD is where everything is, and I have a backup image of it on my standard HDD.

It seems that when I run Afterburner I get the weird morse code sounding noises in GTAIV and it won't load up. Just happened. I had played for a hour or so with FRAPS on. I exited out to try with Afterburner and it did what I mentioned above.

Well, just to let you in in my situation I too am using the new drivers and I get very strange GPU usage during GTA IV. My FPS is great, (in the 50's) but sometimes I see my GPU usage dip to like 49% and my FPS dips for a split second then jumps back up. Every other game is silky smooth though.

Are you using in game vysnc? Or are you using D3DOverrider?

My usage is not in the 40s. It goes in the low 10's even the 0s and then will shoot back up to 40 or whatever, then may hit 80. It fluctuates like this and the game is unplayable. I'm using a 2600k @ 4.5ghz and supposedly GTA is a CPU heavy game. Well that shouldn't be an issue for me, and neither should my 580. In NFS Hot Pursuit useage was in the 40s and as a result the game was stuttering like crazy.

It also looks like certain games will not launch with either Afterburner or Precision enabled. It will just go to a black screen. Once I exit out of those programs, they load up fine..

I am now back on 275.33. The 280 drivers were giving me issues as well. Think I'll just stay with the 275's for awhile.

I think I may have found the culprit: D3DOverrider. With it on Afterburner nor EVGA Precision will work (i.e. some games in Steam will just have a black screen). When I cut it off the game (GTA4) worked fine, with the EVGA overlay. My GPU usage shot up to 99% as well. It dipped when it needed to I guess, but whenever a lot of intensive stuff was happening it went back up to 90+% and I ended up averaging 55-60fps with everything on Very High except water. Compared to earlier it was in the sub 20 range with everything on medium.

Similar story with Hot Pursuit. Although the game was only using 27-30% of my GPU(lol) it was still locked at 60fps. With D3D It was very choppy ala GTA IV.

This is what I've come to after doing this all damn day. I just wanted to play my games

I'd say a fresh windows install with full HDD format, because right now, you don't know where the source of the problem is.

Side note, what card were you using before installing the 580?
