All The 3D Rendering Benchmarks Suck!

Rendering frames that take under a minute is no way to even remotely represent a CPU's strength and even worse, is totally irrelevant to real life rendering situations that are generally hours per frame.

They need to release a benchmark for raytrace rendering where the frames take at LEAST 30 minutes on even the most beast SR-2 system.

The problem is getting worse than before the more cores are introduced. In 3D rendering, each core or thread is given a single region at a time by the software. It crunches away on it and sends back results which are added to the rest of the image...building as if it were a gigantic gigsaw puzzle.

Each of these little pieces is generally called a "bucket". Their size can be customized, but there is a tiny amount of latency between a thread finishing one bucket and starting the next. If you're rendering an image @ 6500 x 5200 for example and your bucket size is 64 x 64, you need to perform sampling on a total of 8250 buckets. Even if the latency is 0.01 seconds, that adds up to become 1.5 minutes longer to render.

When you start having systems with MANY cores, you can get into situations where towards the end of the render, several cores have rendered their final buckets of the scene and simply sit there waiting for the rest to finish before starting on the next frame of the animation.

I render my work on a 3GHz Xeon based system with 160 threads (80 cores). Typically, the time the first cores finish their last buckets to the time the frame is complete (ie: the time I'm not getting 100% CPU usage) can last minutes. Most of my work takes well over 1hr to render though, so those minutes are a small portion in the grand scheme of things.

When you start rendering faster or smaller frames, you start to see the problems with current benchmarks and escalating core counts...which don't matter because if you're rendering short frames, the time they take is more or less irrelevant in the first place. While a 60 core machine might only average 80% core saturation on a 5 minute render, it'll have 99% on a 3 hour render.

Anyway, end of rant! Bring on benchmarks that can saturate cores for longer than 5 minutes...in fact I don't even think Cinebench frames last longer than 1 minute on my 980.

Well since you wont find a real world benchmark for pc enthusiasts because in the "real world" we dont do heavy 3d rendering. WE PLAY GAMES.

How about trying them on a p4?

Just make a custom task in some open source rendering program like Blender and ask people to bench it, then compare.
