My most expensive set up so far

Thread Starter
Intel core i7 2600K
Asus maximus IV Extreme
AMD radeon HD 6990 x2
Silverstone ST1500W
G. skill ripjaws 16GB
Asus BW-12b1Lt
Crucial 128GB m4 2.5inch SATA
Noctua nh - d14
Thermaltake GT10 or Cooler Master HAF X

planning to do an eyefinity set up, what's a cheap display I can get, this is already around $3,500. a lot of people say take the cooler master HAF X over the thermaltake, but thermaltake looks more spacious...and it looks freakin awesome. please criticize my set up so far, I am trying to outdo my old set.

what do you plan on doing with this computer? :O 2 6990's, 2600k, 16gb's of ram, 1500W PSU, are you sure you need all of that? maybe save money by cutting out one 6990, buying the 2500k over the 2600k, and 4/8gb's of ram instead? if you choose to slim down your components, a "cheap" monitor won't be needed.

You won't need a 1500w power supply, perhaps a solid 1200w

Also with a build like that, the Maximus is pointless for air cooling. You'll get the same overclocks on air with the $180 P8P67 Pro.

8x8x provides virtually the same performance as 16x16x on Sandy bridge so no real difference there.

If you are set on air, back off on the motherboard and the power supply and use that money for something else (Like a better monitor)

Since you're already on a good SB setup, just grab some cards capable of eyefinity (doesn't have to be dual 6990's) along with the monitors. Depending on which cards you get you might have to upgrade your PSU and case. Also, switching to the D14 would be nice but not necessary, but your other upgrades seem to be not worth it (at least in my opinion) at this point in time.

Keep the RAM, motherboard, CPU, and case. Don't get two 6990's, get either two 6970's or a 6990+6970. Swap out the PSU for a solid 850-1000w, depending on which GPU's you decide to go with. Keep the 560 Ti for PhysX and Folding. D14/H100, depending on which case you end up with.

Save some cash and get a 64Gb Crucial M4, and keep the Seagate for everything else.

My two cents. You don't need to go all out, especially when half of the items on that list will be idle 99% of the time.

get a solid 1200w PSU, 1500w is not necessary at all, And 12gb RAM is more necessary than 16gb.

And if your gaming, The 2500k would be better.
And if your trying to burn a hole in your wallet.... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824001428

My friend has that

I'd almost argue it's worth the money.

You can get three 23.6" 3D displays for less then that. Sure it doesn't come with a nifty stand and slim bezels.

If the OP really wanted to lighten his wallet, he'd grab this.

LOL, how funny, I was just looking at that, its freakin nice. I saw that in youtube and it looks ballin. And i'm still nubish at this, but I can mix the 6990 and 6970 because they are the same company correct? I would really save a lot if i just get the 64gb crucial...but I wanna get that ballin ass monitor LOL. Thanks guys, you helped me a lot...I will make my final decision and its gonna be shopping time!!!

You can use the Corsair AX1200 PSU instead of the Silverstone 1500. My system uses the AX1200 under full load fine. Two 6990s are good for benchmarks, but for games, you can use a 6990+6970 instead.
