Are these compatible?

post #1 of 6

Awhile back when DDR3 was first really becoming popular I had to buy a new motherboard and get 4GB of DDR3 for $120. I just bought this ram because of the great deal, 8GB of DDR3 $35 with free shipping after the promo code. I know it is 1333, and 9-9-9-24 but currently according to Everest my 4GB of Kingston DDR3 is running at 9-9-9-24 and at 1333. I was wondering if I could just throw in my new 8GB for a total of 12GB and get better performance or if the different brands would cause lesser performance? All my settings in my bios are auto as I am not overclocking this machine right now.

Yes, it will be fine. If you have two sets of ram that are different, the BIOS will natively run all the ram DIMM's at the lowest RAM speed present.

Okay, thank you so much. Will 12GB of RAM noticeably increase my performance from 4GB or will it make much of a difference?

Gaming=no performance increase

editing=anything over 8gb is pretty useless for the easy stuff.

I noticed a difference from 8gb to 16gb, so I'd assume you'd see an increase.

Most people would tell you otherwise, but I'm a skeptic.

Generic RAM will mix with no issue whatsoever.
You will see a benefit with the extra RAM when you edit video or run RAM intensive tasks, vs. having 4GB.
