What's the Build? When to Build?

Currently on laptop right now, and I'm considering building a desktop system at home in the near future or around xmas or later (for sale). If I want:

- intel based mobo for a max two card amd/nvidia system

When should I start shopping for parts for the build so I can meet the new tech cycle if it's here, or coming up soon in cpu/mobo/video card? By that I mean I don't wanna spend regular price for something that may be replaced by new tech six month down the road. I can wait six months and buy new tech around the same price or a bit premium, or I can buy old tech at dramatic discount

I'm looking at the OB section of video cards from deals section, it seems that the current gen has been out for a while. I also don't know what general core parts I should be using, like what cpu fit what motherboard.

Just for a 24 inch screen for modest games. At most two video cards, no water cooling etc.

I haven't been paying attention to the tech path for the last two years and last build was a asus 680i core 2 duo.

Easy. Buy when you are ready to buy. New tech is always around the corner, if you wait for new stuff to come out youll be waiting forever.

At this present time the i5 2500K is getting very positive reviews and feedback on here for gaming paired up with a reasonable GPU(GTX460/560and 570).I can't comment on the AMD CPU or GPU sorry but sure someone else on here will let you know what AMD CPU/GPU combo is also worth looking at. If you were to get the i5 2500K it would last you a while and you can just upgrade the GPU at a later date if you felt your FPS were not good enough. I only went with the i7 2600K because the machine is running folding@home 24*7.

DDR3 is at this time at a really good price(possibly at an all time low in the UK) in my opinion will it be at this price in 6 months that unfortunately is hard to predict.

i agree with just4funuk

2500k is a great chip to go for atm, pair it with a Asus P8P67 Pro with 8GB of 1600 RAM and a gtx 560 ti twin frozer and you got a very good spec rig.

also can add a SSD to speed things up.

Ok what are you using this for? Did you say modest gaming? Define that?

For modest gaming to light gaming, nothing to powerful is needed.
Wow -i have a intell e7500 ( dual core) running a gts 250, wich plays most games just fine. Played COD black ops fine. Sli gts 250,s play most games very well ( for the money) even a gts 450 or a gtx 550. These are all good cards.

Now if your looking to play high end games ( like bfbc2 - bf3 and so on) You should look into four cores , and a powerful single gpu! ( just my opinoin)

Duno. I played a bit css and dota a while back, maybe build for dota 2 and starcraft 2.

2500k and asus sounds like an okay combo. I just don't know when I should pick the time to buy a video card. I'll be waiting til christmas after some thought. At least wait for a final sale and then see which is the best value.

thx

Yeah i would go with the 2500k for sure, even 2400 or non k version if no overclocking is planned! A good gtx 560 should handle whatever you throw at it!

Ps. by christmas there should be good deals on current cards, and maybe new tech! So do some research.
Good luck.
