Gtx 470 > hd 5870?

Thread Starter
So i send my HD 5870 in for RMA after some 2D problems, and buy a GTX 465 from EVGA B-Stock for a total of $114.98 to get me by. I find out my GTX 465 is actually a GTX 470 so i flash the Bios and have me a GTX 470. Now I am in the process of overclocking, and with stock clocks of .925v and clocks of 607core and 1215 shaders to go with 1674 memory off I go. I get it up to 1.025v, 840core 1640 shaders and 1850 memory Kombuster stable so i go to benchmark.

Here are the results vs my overclocked HD 5870:

BTW both test were at 3800mhz cpu with 1600mhz 6-8-6-20-24 RAM, even though test do not seem to pick up this info correctly.

Depends on clock rates and the bench used.

In tess the 470 has a big advantage, it has the third best tessellation performance you can get from Nvidia, it only has two less units than a 580 and one less than the 480/570.

In DX9/10 they run pretty close to one another at max clocks. While in DX11 and specially in tess heavy applications the 470 will pull ahead by a decent amount.

The 470 is the black sheep of Fermi, it is a sleeper card with great potential.

So I have seen. Might be keeping this and selling my RMA'd 5870 or 6950 whatever they give back. I should grab another unlockable 465 asap.

I know a few members who have switched to unlocking 465s from higher end AMD cards simply because the two major concerns with the 470 - power draw and heat/noise output weren't major factors for them.

The value of the 465s that unlock and even 470s right now is really hard to beat no matter which camp you're in.

I put mine on water, you can see how well they scale with their overclocks.

Nice numbers! Thanks for the info Balla! Only had the card for 2 days, will continue to play. Just OC'ed and played GTAIV with no hiccups! And I downgraded my 1090T to an X3 while waiting for Bulldozer.

Edit: and nice temps Balla!

Bulldozer + SLI 470s would do you well for awhile I'm sure. Not that 5870s wouldn't either, but you can get more for the 5870 than you can the 470, despite the performance differences

I did a ton of research on this last year before I purchased my 470. While most websites claimed that HD5870 > 470, user benchmarks on various websites showed otherwise after Nvidia released new drivers.

Basically in DX11 games with everything maxed out, 4xAA, 16xAF the 470 will get much better minimum framerates vs HD5870. I've seen a lot of comments from people upgrading to 470 from 5850/5870 mentioning this fact.

Nowadays, with the latest drivers I'm pretty sure a stock 470 > stock HD5870 in pretty much anything (even 3D Mark where ATI used to have an edge).

Not that it matters, but you forgot about GTX590.

They are pretty close stock. But the GTX470 has stupid low stock clocks. If you get them up to 900 core that's a FIFTY percent overclock and it really pulls ahead. (can actually beat the GTX570.)
