The arrangement of the pins lets the newer chips remain more compact while increasing the pin pad density on the bottom. Compare a 775 chip to a 1155/6 and you'll notice the 115x pin pads are more slanted and closer. The old S370 cpu's were huge because they had actual pins that stuck out and were very spaced apart.

The early 980X samples were clocked at 2.4GHz. That's quite a bit in my opinion.

Obviously they have a lot more clocking to do, but keep in mind this is an early sample (probably high leakage) meant to be kept under 70W. They have almost double the power envelope to work with for the retail 130W part as well as a significant amount of time. I don't doubt that this will be retail from 3.4-3.8 with turbo in the 4GHz range for the most expensive (i.e. Extreme Edition) chips.

The fastest Opterons and Xeons are generally more than double the clock speed of the slowest models of the same line. Fussing over the clock speeds of an ES sample is meaningless.

Package size as little to do with process size.

65nm LGA-775 CPUs are smaller than 45nm AM3 CPUs and will be smaller than the 32nm AM3+ Bulldozers.

The difference is number of pins/pads and how densely they are packed.

For all the talk about the low clock speeds of these engineering samples, no one bothered to look at the third page of the coolaler thread. There is a CPU-Z screenshot from JCornell (a reliable source) of a newer stepping eight core engineering sample that is running at 3.1 GHz. The low clock samples tested at the beginning of the thread were listed in CPU-Z as Stepping 2, which was shown in another coolaler thread to be the B0 Stepping. This newer one is Stepping 5 (alphanumeric stepping unknown, I'd guess C2 [EDIT: or D0] based on rumors of a flawed C0 and C1 stepping).
