Any good file sharing program for LAN network??

Thread Starter
I have files in a computer with XP professional which I want to share, but I hate using the windows sharing since I feel it is very not secure and so hard to set as I want it to be. I have ubuntu and windows XP home computers as clients. Any programs which I can do that within my Lan network at home? Both lan and wireless connect though one router....thanks.biggrin.gif

Hello, this software is the one you're looking for

http://www.d-lan.net/

" easily exchange a large amount of data in a local area network environment"
  • Share files and folders in a local area network environment (LAN). Subnets are supported.
  • Distributed transfers to increase performance and reliability.
  • Very easy to use: no configuration, no central server.

Very very easy to use, i hope this answer your question and be of help for you smile.gif
Regards
Chris

"Storage for Open Source FreeNAS™ is an Open Source Storage Platform based on FreeBSD and supports sharing across Windows, Apple, and UNIX-like systems. FreeNAS™ 8 includes ZFS, which supports high storage capacities and integrates file systems and volume management into a single piece of software."

I store all my files on one server on the network and use samba to share them to all other machines.
https://help.ubuntu.com/10.04/serverguide/C/samba-fileserver.html
I mount the share as a network drive on my windows machines. Its basically a central repository anyone on the lan can get to.

Any linux distro, however the install process will be slightly different. Don't know if it runs on windows or not.

You're on a lan, why do you need security? Unless you're at a public lan, you control who is part of the network and who is not.

Otherwise you could look at a DC++ server, linux has plenty servers for you to download and try till you find one you like, windows on the other hand has very few decent DC++ hubs. You can setup a registration system or something or put a password on the hub.

What do NTFS permissions not do for you?

Specifically what are the security concerns on your LAN?

From my experience this one is really good, and not only in LAN.
Definitely try this.
