Cleaning thermal paste off my i7 bottom with paint thinner, safe?

Thread Starter
Hi, as described in the title, Is it safe to use paint thinner to wipe a thermal paste off the processor's pins? do paint thinners leave residues? does the residue do any harm to the chip? the processor has been running fine for almost 5 months on stock settings without a single glitch but after reading some article regarding the danger of solvents, I recalled the time I cleaned my processor and I was like oh ****
I'm worried whether my chip's MTBF has deteriorated/reduced

anyone here can give some enlightment on this? :\

Nail Polish remover is what I normally use, isnt paint thinner Ethanol/white spirit? i would think it may be too strong for that, dont quote me on that though smile.gif

Some paint thinners leave residue. Look at the ingredients.

100% acetone is safe for short exposure and won't leave any residue.

Alcohol is safe for longer term exposure and high purity isopropyl won't leave any residue either.

Most residues won't hurt anything, unless they are conductive or get in the way of pin or heatsink contact.

Go down to local computer store and pick up some thermal remover and conditioner. They usually come as a pair. Cheap safe and effective.

so do I really need to pull the chip off the board and clean it again with proper solution?

Why even ask if you went ahead and cleaned it with paint thinner anyway?

Also, why would you be wiping off thermal paste from the pins?

not thermal paste but the paint thinner residue, I'm afraid the residue still there and get in the way of pins which prolly could degrade the performance/mtbf
