You can, but it is not recommended. The new ram might have other timings and voltages that might be incompatible with the ram you have right now.

Your best bet would be buying more of the same ram, or changing all old ram sticks with new. RAM is very cheap as of lately, you might get a new set for real cheap.

To check: most kits do print some specs on the sticker or on the package (in the form of C9, 9-9-9, or 9-9-9-24) but if the ram you have is the ValueRAM, your best bet would be to look at the whole model of the RAM (like on the sticker on the left) and dig on the Kingston website.

Other fast solution is check timings using a program like CPU-Z to tell you the timings of the RAM, but some motherboards do an auto OCing of the timings. Check the SPD section of CPU-Z to get the timings and voltage.

To see if it's compatible: Compare the speed, timings and voltage of the 2 kits. If they're equal, they have a nice chance of working together, even tho they may still not work (there are like 15 "hidden" timings that might affect compatibility). If your mobo supports it, you can check all the timings on the BIOS.

No, it will simply not POST (boot) unless you remove any of the conflicting RAM sticks.

Happened to me using two different Corsair XMS3 kits. So you better buy a new kit altogether, dig around for the same kit of the RAM you have or do a research on how to change timings manually on the mobo and do the ol' trial and error.
