Drive for W520

Thread Starter
I'm looking at buying a Lenovo W520, but I'm not really happy with any of the drive options available.

I'd like to at least have the operating system residing on an SSD, and I'd like to take advantage of the SATA III speeds. I was looking at the Patriot Wildfire and OCZ Max IOPS, 240Gigs both, but 240Gigs is a bit less storage then I'd like and I'm not really willing to buy 2x 240Gb drives to RAID - a bit more then I want to spend.

Another option might be to forgo the DVD drive and use a 120Gb SSD like the Vertex 3 as the system drive and a second mechanical drive for storage, but I haven't yet found a 2.5" SATA-III hard drive that I would want to put in a laptop., though I guess I could still use SATA II.

I'd prefer to have at least 500Gigs of storage, but I'm open to anything. If anyone has any configuration recommendations I'd love to hear them - also any recommendations on specific SSDs would be greatly appreciated/

Since you want over 500GB, skip the DVD drive and put a hard drive in the Ultrabay instead. Don't bother with SATA III because hard drives won't reach those speeds anyway. I got a 500GB Western Digital Scorpio Black last year as a primary drive for my T500. It seems not much has changed since then either. Both Western Digital and Hitachi have released 750GB versions of their 7200rpm drives and I presume the Seagate Momentus XT is still the fastest because it has SSD caching.

Seems like that's about the only way I'm going to get 500. Any recommendations on a decent SSD? 80Gb or so is probably plenty if I'm putting a regular drive in too.

Crucial C300 / M4 SSDs are the way to go right now.

There's one firmware update, but it's easy to apply, and there are no known/unexplained crash/BSOD issues.

You could then also get a Scorpio Black 750GB. I would take that drive over the Momentus XT, as the 4GB cache is mostly beneficial to repeat-reads. (OS/Apps, basically) As a storage drive, the Scorpio's raw speed will probably outdo the XT.
