How much fast is a file server compare to NAS?

Thread Starter
I have a Buffalo Linkstation NAS and it has a gigabit ethernet network, and it's connected to my gigabit switch. The hard drive speed is 7200rpm, and the space is 500 GB. I get around 14 MB/s when transferring files from a PC(in gigabit network) to the NAS.

The transferring speed is slow. So with a 500 GB hard drive that has 7200 rpm (without RAID),how much fast will a file server be when transferring files?

A modern 2-platter 500GB drive is capable of between 80-100MB/sec as far as I am aware.

The hardware that NAS's are built on are not anything special. All the NAS's I have owned transfer at about 10 - 20 mb witch is way slower than a file server.

The NAS might need to be configured for transfering at optimal speeds. I imagine there is a web-interface to do this?
