Not a little increase. Went from 7c to 25c.
I had turned off my AC and closed my windows in preparation for autumn.

Guess the climate decided to give me and the yellow trees a small reprieve.

Probably a little more, but not much. You'll need a Z68 board, or a P67 board if you have a graphics card to use, wich will cost you about 100-120$ the cheapest ones. Adding 315$ for the 2600K and another 50 or so to a fast RAM kit, you end up spending 465-485$

Have an old 4650 and Microcenter nearby !! But then that's $450 might bump my next build from quad core SB to hex core SE-E...Is it likely that 3980E will pull out twice the ppd of 3820k?

double the PPD is hard to get i think. it may double the PPD output of a 2500K. perhaps it will perform 50% better, but that's just a guess. i only have read a few possible info leaks, as to speeds and cache size.

I just read AMD will be launching a 20-core server chip in Q1 next year me wants one!

Too many people speculate about how much will BD perform. I say let's wait until it gets released and then we'll see
i honestly believe that if it wasn't to perform well, they wouldn't be investing so much money in this, they know what it can do.

They don't really know what it can do until after they've invested into it though. Of course I do agree with your statement that speculation isn't worth a whole lot right now.
