SATA 3 backwards compatible with SATA 2 connectors?

Thread Starter
Can you connect a SATA 3 HDD with SATA 3 cables to a SATA 2 connector on the motherboard?

I have a Rampage III black edition with two SATA 3 and six SATA 2 connectors onboard. I don't have enough SATA 3 connectors to connect my SSD as bootable and 2 HDD in RAID 1 on those connectors. So I have to plug only my SSD bootable primary on a SATA 3 connector and plug the other two HDD in RAID 1 on the other SATA 2 connectors.

I hope this isn't confusing.

SATA 3 cables are no different than SATA 2 cables. To answer your question: Yes.

This is simply not true. Not all Sata 2 cables can run at Sata 3 speeds. This has been verified by OCZ and independant testers.

It could be said that high quality sata 2 cables are capable of sata 3 speeds though.

Okay, that's what I thought. Then I'm confused why my windows 7 won't boot up when my RAID 1 HDDs are plugged in, but when I take them out my windows 7 is able to boot up. I set my boot priorities to boot from my SSD with Windows 7 and configured my two HDDs in RAID 1 and had all the drives plugged in before I installed Windows 7. Now Windows 7 only starts if I have the SSD in there only and without my RAID drives. so confused why it's not working with them in there.

Hi Mcg75, all of my SSD and HDD are connected through these cables. It says it's backwards compatible. http://www.frozencpu.com/products/10128/sat-156/UV_Blue_SATA_III_18_Cable_w_Latch_-_Right_Angle_to_Straight_SCIII-18A-B.html?tl=g2c433s1085

Cables aren't your problem here. I was just trying to correct some bad info given out in this thread.

I wish I had the experience with raid to be able to help you but I don't.

Just to be sure, so the SATA 2 motherboard connectors should work with SATA 3 cables and SATA 3 HDD?
