Always built AMD but now will try Intel ... I Need Your Help Though

post #1 of 5
Thread Starter
For some years now I've only built AMD based gaming PC's
because the price was in my budget and the performance
was good too. But I've a bit more cash right now so I figured
I'd give Intel a try since they seem to be the make to go
with for SLI

The thing is, there seems to be a zillion Intel compatible mobos
and almost as many Intel CPU's to choose from. What I'm thinking
of doing is building an Intel based gaming rig that's a click or two
above the hardware I have listed below so I'll be ready for DX11
games (tessellation, etc) and for a CRT to LCD monitor upgrade

The hardware I have at the moment runs well @ 1600 x 1200 res
(smooth even with Crysis) but eventually the Trinitron monitor will
stop working and I'll have to go with a 21"-24" wide screen LCD with
1920 x 1200 native res. I want to be sure to have enough horsepower
in reserve when that faithful day arrives and since the 460gtx scales
so well, SLI might be a must - unless 480GTX prices drop a whole lot
from the current level it's at right now. I like to use gobs of Anti-Alias
and x16 Anisotropic

My requirements are:

- Gaming ( no video editing, no audio stuff, just gaming & internet)
- TV (I use a KWorld USB stick)

can't think of any other special needs at the moment. Thanks for any

What's your budget? What you want is an i5 2500k rig. If you live near a microcenter there is a great deal right now on a cpu/mobo combo. Plus the 2500k is $180 there, as opposed to 220 on newegg.

If not, you still want i5. Great overclocker and the best bang for the buck gaming proc there is right now, period.
You may also want to think about upgrading that psu at some point.

I just built a computer this weekend after asking a bunch of questions here. This is what I ended up with.

cpu = i5 2500k
mobo = ASRock Extreme4 Gen3
ram = G Skill Ripjaws X 8gb
ssd = 64 gb Crucial m4 for os
hdd = 1tb WD Caviar Black
optical drive = lg blu ray burner
gpu = GTX 580
psu = seasonic x650 (yes I'll have to upgrade if i decide to sli later on)
cpu cooler = hyper 212+

Still in the process of installing things but so far everything is great so I recommend any of the same items I chose
