create domain controller with vmware workstation

I'm looking at creating a domain controller using Windows 2008 installed on VMware Workstation 7.

Even though this DC will be a virtual machine will my physcial machines still be able to connect to this DC since it will be a virtual computer?

Also if I can, how often does the virtual machine need to be turned on? Do I need to have it powered on at all times?

Thanks in advanced!

The PC's should be able to connect to the Server 2008 domain controller just fine.
All you will need to do is make sure that the virtual network card for the virtual machine is set to 'bridged'. It will also need a static IP address (make sure it's in the same range as the rest of the computers on the network)

Yes you will need to have it powered on at all times or else users won't be able to logon.

May I ask what sort environment are you planning on setting up the domain controller in & the type of PC that will be running the virtual machine

The VM that I've setup for the DC has been assigned one core and 1GB of RAM on my main PC. It runs perfectly fine, then again a DC doesn't really do anything either when there aren't any machines connected to it.

Since I have to run this full time I'll likely hold up for another week or two and build an ESXi host.
