i72600k prime95 unstable@stock

Thread Starter
I'm having prime95 giving me errors after around 20-30 mins of the 3 predefined tests even at stock cpu settings :/ I've always used LinX for testing, and even today I had a successful 20times run @ 4.2ghz auto voltages, but prime gave errors! I have yet to see a BSOD tho, even while I've been running 3x fah clients + utorrent + playing BC2 for hours @ 4.4ghz auto vcore.

My temps have been ~80C while testing, and normal daily heavy use have been like 69-73C. Idles around 39C.

I've had my ram tested seperately w/ memtest for 2 full passes @ the settings I've used ever since, so I find it unlikely that the ram is starting to fail all of a sudden.

My PSU is getting surprisingly hot, dunno if that's normal.

I have a well-ventilated HAF922 case.

One time - that I've noticed - I started up prime95 I got this weird message saying it couldn't properly detect the hyperthreading "cores", so it simply guessed the order of the real cores/HT cores. Dunno, this Prime thingy seems a bit dodgy if you ask me.

I really dont know what to make of this :/ Any help/thoughts is/are greatly appreciated...

Reseat your cooler. No way you should be getting those temps with an H50 + 2600K@4.2.

I get max temps of 75C @4.5GHz, 1.34v with temps averaging in the mid 60s. Same cooler BTW, but with push-pull fans.

Welcome to OCN smile.gif

First of all the temps do sound a bit high, what are your ambient temps? Is it a fresh OS install and fresh build?

Thanks for the fast replies guys smile.gif

Regarding my temps... Yeah, I've come to think they are a bit high recently, so I've tried reseating my cooler (w/ AS5) as well to the same effect. I simply can't do it better. The reason I have high temps is because I have relatively high ambient temps of ~27C/~80F. Thinking of ordering an H100 as well to combat 'em.

It's quite a new Win7 install (1 month), quite clean as well with only a few apps. Sure, it's had it's BSODs while I've experimented with LLC among other stuff smile.gif

My main concern is wheter I've damaged the CPU from testing, but honestly it's never shut down on me and I've never allowed the CPU MORE than 80C while testing.

Yeah so I put the RAM back to 1333 and auto timings as well, and prime ran blend like a champ for ~9 hours; I guess this rules out whether I damaged my CPU.

So where to go from here to get the ram stable? My only guess would be upping the voltage on qpi/vtt a notch to try and stabilize 1600mhz. Should that even be necessary at that speed? Where I'm getting at here is if my ram have gotten faulty all of a sudden (I never gave them more than 1.5v or any other setting they're not rated for)

Just give them 1.65 and go to 1600MHz. It won't hurt them at all.

Actually. I take that back..

Look at your RAM's revision number... If it is 2.12... then there is nothing you can do. The 2.12 doesn't like to be overclocked at all. If it is 5.11, then you can push it to 2133 MHz with ease.

You know I was just thinking about this the other day.

My 2600K is working fine (not overclocked at the moment) and yet I get errors when running Prime95. Usually the workers stop after 1 or 2 minutes with a "FATAL ERROR".

What gives?

If it is Small FFT, then it is vcore, if it is large FFT, with a lot of RAM, then you need to up the voltage on your ram or increase VTTIO.

your psu may be going bad. If the psu cannot supply clean power to the board, it will cause errors. Do you have another psu you can try and use?

With sandy bridge, blend is used to determine vcore. small fft, and large fft are usless. Also you really dont need to increase vccio much at all. Im running my 8gb of ram at 1866mhz with stock vccio.
