Building my first HTPC, need some help

Thread Starter
I'm putting together two HTPC's, one for myself and one my a famely member.

I"m tying to put this thing together for a cheep as possible. Here are the parts I choose...

My 2 main concerns are the on board video card and the power supply that comes with that case rated at 275W.

To be honnest I'm not even sure that the motherboard has on board video, but it does have an HDMI port ???

Thanks!

What price do all of these components come out to?

Have you looked into the Intel Atom or AMD Fusion platforms? May be cheaper, quieter, and cooler.

207$ Cnd - I also used price match, I'm not concerned about the price at this point, but mostly the low PSU Watts and the on board video card. Can the onboard video card support 1080p video?

Those will pull maybe 100watts each.
As for the onboard video some people say that they can get the 785g to work flawless and others have issues. Worst case you need to spend $20 more each and get a 6450/5450.
Are you going to be running windows or linux? Media Portal, XBMC, WMC7, Boxee?

Thanks for the reply; I guess I'll be ok with the PSU, and video card. I read on the MSI web site that the on board video card is pretty good with HD 1080P content play back... (According to their own web site ofcourse).

I'll be installing Windows XP with a codec pack, no anti virus, no games..... These machines are strictly for movies, maybe a few old Nintendo emulation games

I'm downloading online content from another PC and will just copy over what ever I need.... which shouldn't be much at all.

I would personally go with an APU from AMD, this is what they are made for.

Sounds good to me, the only problem is that they are much more expensive. I got this mobo for like 45$ and the CPU for 53$

I doubt I could get anything close with a mobo and APU combo.

True, does seem a lot more pricey...You do get Dirt 3 though lol

http://secure.newegg.com/Shopping/Sh...mit=ChangeItem

10 bux off with this code: $10 off with promo code EMCKBKA34, ends 8/15

EDIT: Also lol newegg review

Quote:
Pros: This chip runs nice and cool. Runs at 2 degrees celcius on idle. The stock CPU cooler is good enough, unless you are going to over clock. From what I have read you can crossfire this chip with a single video card. Didn't want to spend the extra money to try it out. Haven't tried any gaming on it. I basically built the computer as a media center PC.
apu runs below ambient....I wish you could reply to newegg reviews.

For the llano's yeah they are still a bit pricey with a motherboard. You can get a E-350 with a mini ITX board for ~$100 though on newegg.

Sure but it's going to be much, much slower than an Athlon II X2+785G/880G combo for the same price. I realize you don't need much CPU power for HTPC use but both Atom and Zacate fall under too little CPU. They can barely do anything if GPU hardware acceleration isn't working.

As for power consumption, highly doubt that 275W PSU can actually deliver 275W but the system shouldn't use much power anyway. I'd estimate idle and video playback power consumption at around 40~60W with max load at around 100W or so.
