these i took with my 35mm, the colors are great but if you really look at them the sharpness really is not there.
The first photo looks fine to me. Can you point out what makes you think it's soft?

As for the second one, at f/13 I'm going to say you're experiencing diffraction with too low an f-stop on this one.

And I really have to ask: Is there pixel peeping going on here?

This. If you want a zoom that's as sharp or sharper than a prime, you're looking at $900 at the very least. Used.

For whatever reason my EXIF plugin isn't working in Chrome... But yeah those look like they're suffering from diffraction more than anything. If you think the 35 f/1.8 is a soft lens then I'd love to get some of what you're smoking.

As far as new lenses, I'll second the suggestions for either the 16-85 VR or an f/2.8 normal zoom.

There's no EXIF data in the posted photos, so I had to go onto his Flickr and read the EXIF on his original size photos.
