5770 Upgrade?

Thread Starter
Im slowly upgrading my system and I recently got a 990FXA-ud3 mobo and a 212+ so I oc'd my 955 to 4ghz stable. I was wondering if it would be better to get another 5770 for CF or buy a new card completely. I have $50 atm and Im selling my ipod since I dont use it so I'll probably have like $130 which isnt alot for a gpu. Will CF 5770s give me a good performance boost since the mobo has 16x16 crossfire/sli?

check newegg daily or as much as u can for open box video card deals. I almost got my hands on a gtx 580 for 280. 6970 for 150. 6950 for 130 or 140.

I've got an MSI hawk 5770 and I've decided to wait for a 7xxx series instead of upgrading my PSU + buying another 5770.

Just this last week I upgraded my son's computer from a 5770 to a HD 6850. Thanks to ebay, sold the 5770 for $94 Shipped and got the 6850 for $74 after rebate and selling free games that came with it (Dirt3/Shogun2/STALKER). So cost wise after eBay fees it ended up being about a wash. OC'd the 6850 to 960/1160 so it is about as fast as a 6870. Only done some limited testing so far, but performance increase is around 50% over the 5770 for most tests @ 1920x1200. As a matter of fact, according to this old review there are some games where a single 6850 is as fast as crossfired 5770's. I think that the 68xx cards have improved with drivers since this review as well.

So, some choices I would contemplate are:
a) Sell your 5770 for $70-80-ish and take your $130 and together get a GTX560TI or 1GB HD6950 or GTX470 if you can find one

b)Sell your 5770 for $70-80ish and use some of your $50 and pick a 6850. If that is not enough power grab a second for x-fire with your remaining $130 (This only really makes sense if you do not mind rebates and selling the included games).

c)Wait a bit longer for 7xxx, which may be another 4+ months out. Chances are the 7850 will be sub $200 which may outperform the 69xx cards....but this is just speculation.

You have a powerful enough power supply, just get a second 5770!

Probably one of the best multi-GPU scaling cards to date. Performance wise, CF'd 5770's are pretty damn close to 5870's, and beat out 5850's.

In most games, yes.
HD 5770 CrossFireX will perform similar to HD 5870 or HD 6950.
And I don't see any reason to say that HD 5870 or 6950 is not enough for high performance gaming.

I was looking at the bstock section on the evga site and saw a 560ti for $180. I think I might just get that.

The difference between the 560ti and a second 5770 is going to be negligible. The second 5770 will be over $80 cheaper as well.

Just saying. If you are going to buy a new single card, get something that makes the premium worth it over a second 5770.
