No, if the controller supports TRIM, you get TRIM. For example, my laptop has SATA 3G (I think), and my SSD is 6G.

Yes, but SATA 3G and SATA 6G are not.

SATA (original)= 1.5Gb/s
SATA II (Generation 2)= 3Gb/s
SATA III (Generation 3)= 6Gb/s

You could just get a SATA 2G SSD or if you want even better performance you could get a PCI-E SSD which is even faster than SATA 6G

I have a small problem with your logic:

#1 Your part where you said, "SATA 2G SSD.." Umm... No such thing. There is a SATA II however, but SATA II runs at 3Gb/s, not 2.
and #2. Umm.. a PCIe SSD only has a top read speed of 540MB/s. Link

That is NOT faster than 6GB/s

Would still be a tremendous improvement.

My laptop with SATA 1.5 Gbps, an Indilinx based SSD and no TRIM completely obliterates any mechanical drive as far as the 'snappy' feel within the OS, for reference.

The vast majority of your OS activity will not be utilizing full sequential R/W bandwidth.

Yeah, made a mistake there with the 2G.

But I never said PCI-E x1

PCI-E x4 SSD:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227742

And that's not even taking the Enterprise - Category SSD's into account.

But anyway, the point is:

If he only has SATA 2/ 3G then there's no reason to get a SATA 3/ 6G SSD.

60G OCZ VERTEX 2 SSD's are like 100$ so that's worth it for sure.
