The better solution would be to just buy a soundbar + subwoofer, but again I'm trying to work with what I've got.
Your speakers that you have now don't have real bass either. They have mid bass, and its muddy and distorted at best. You are lacking the ENTIRE area that a real subwoofer is supposed to pick up completely.

You're also missing mid range, and higher range treble.

Yeah I know they aren't the best but to my ears they sound pretty good. I imagine they would sound just as good for blu-ray's.

They are old and out-dated for sure since they are like over 8 years old. But till I can get something better like the Klipsch that I mentioned, these will have to do.

Snippet from review about bass:

At this price range, its bass response is very good. When it comes to bass, the Z-640 is solid and delivers very accurate bass, unlike some of the ported subwoofers I've came across.

Anyways my OP was to find out if this was even possible to connect to a set-top blu-ray player and have it provide audio through my computer speakers and you guys responded asap with a response and for that I thank you.

LOL, I opened this thread by stating I was a novice to audio stuff.

Is your point just that I should stick to what I have been doing which is to just use the audio setup from my wimpy 20w built-in TV speakers vs listening to them through my computer speakers?

Either way I am going to try it through my logitech's and see what's what, or should I say hear what's what.

Go ahead and enjoy your speakers. I'm not about to dissect that post and all that was wrong with it though. That's all I'm saying.

Trust me on this, once you hear what REAL speakers and subwoofers sound like, you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

You mentioned in the OP that you wanted to use your Z-640 5.1 pc speakers right, but your output connection for the bluray player is an RCA(red and white) which is a stereo signal. It would be better to use an optical output from your bluray player than RCA, but then again your sound card doesn't have any optical input. Your onboard sound does have the optical, but it's only optical out and not in. I think it would be best to save yourself the hassle and not even bother solving this unless you are really curious. I know that you are thinking "well....what if?" .......I guess I could say well what if you find something else to get your mind of off it . Like i.e. look and ask for advice for a proper sound setup. Plenty of people here would suggest and help you out.

edit: and when you have some expendable income you will know what to buy. I guess it's more like setting a goal for now and strive to achieve that goal .

Yeah the main point was I wanted to have better audio than what my TV's built-in speakers offer. I figured even my old/cheap computer speakers would provide an overall more pleasent audio experience since they provide higher RMS power and bass which the built-in TV speakers do not.

I've been wanting to get a BD-ROM for a while now so that I can use my PC audio but this is a cheaper solution even if I don't get 5.1

just remember that decent audio doesn't have to cost the earth - especially if you can make the enclosures etc yourselves. Decent class D amps can be had for a few dollars from China, and once you switch the input caps out they can sound amazing (but you have to be careful - there is also a lot of junk there too...)
