Alright, I haven't gone through the whole thread, but I hope someone would have said Ikaruga by now.

THIS. (and the first Ghost Recon as well). Both games had parts I had to retry dozens of times (on normal difficulty) and sometimes had to go back through an hours worth of game to choose a different loadout. lots of mouse-slamming

On the final level of GRAW2 you are dropped onto the middle of a bridge that is covered by infantry, an RPG, and three .50 cal MGs which kill you with one shot. Basically you and your entire team died within two seconds if you didn't do things right.

Still GRAW1&2 are among my favorite games because they are the most realistic games I've ever played. Weapon sounds, mechanics, reloads, and ammunition system (by mag instead of by bullet like most games) are all great and the squad tactics aspect adds a cool extra dimension to your normal modern FPS.

Ever notice that so many games will never let you be in a no win situation? Or a situation you are not supposed to win?

Like I love Mass Effect, but unless you some how managed to speed though areas with out killing stuff and getting the XP you will never be in spot you can't win (provided you haven't sold all your weapons or something). Basically the only way the game is impossible is if you purposely make it so.

I think that is why I find myself liking Fallout New Vegas. I never got it till recently since it basically looked like just more Fallout 3 (and it mostly is), but I love how the game lets you wonder into areas with Giant Scorps or Deathclaws before you are able to kill them. I spent about two hours the other day before successfully killing a Death Claw with a Caravan shot gun (with alot of slugs and drug use...and I also had ED-E and was level 4). In this same play through I have fought my way over Black Mountain and I am right outside New Vegas...I am level 9 now and I think i am getting close to getting to use power armor...I need one more ventalation system part for the Brothers of Steel. I've never played it before, so I am hoping they are done having me run around. (I didn't read any sploilers, but a friend told me to use the power armor I had to complete their quest line...which I think I would have figured out on my own)

This is what I want in a game. Give me something that is supposed to be impossible and let me figure out a way to do it. Games used to do this all the time.
