Athlon II x3 455 with GTX 460

Thread Starter
Hey people!

I'm doing a budget build (sorry, I'm 16 and don't have a lot of disposable income).

I'm contemplating running a x3 455 with a GTX 460. I plan to overclock them both on this mobo ASRock N68-S3 UCC.

Would this processor overclocked be adequate for 2011 games on medium settings? or atleast cod 4/css? Would it bottleneck the graphics card? Or would you recommend a different processor?

Thanks, any help appreciated.

Hey!

Welcome to overclock.net

Yes, that setup is able of running most of modern games at least in Medium settings. 3 cores are enough to almost all the demanding games, and i don't think it will bottleneck a GTX460, althoug you may see better FPS coming from a i3-2100

I understand you don't have much money to invest, but i would definitely buy a better board if planning on doing some OC, that board isn't the best overclocker, and with such a low number of Power phases and no VRM cooling, you can't push that chip very far.

how much is your budget? maybe we can find a better gaming setup for you

Thanks for the reply matroska.

£300 / 340 euro / $490

My brother actually has a i3-2100 which is the computer I'm on now! He said I should get it but than things start getting expensive and there's no overclocking, or would it still be better?

Some other parts I've look at are:

4gb kingston ram £17 ***? Is this right? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KINGSTON-4...item19c701923b

basic case with fan at front: http://www.ebuyer.com/160913-casecom...-kj-3392-white

I would only recommend a better board, and while you're at it, one that would llet you upgrade in the future. Something in the AM3+ socket, like the Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3, although that would mean you would have to passa the 300 pounds. Everything else seems fine, except for the PSU. If you're going to put a GTX 460 in that setup, you need to get a better PSU. the one you linked doesn't seem to be a safe bet when you'll be running a mid-high-end GPU, wich requires 2 PCI-e connectors IIRC. Something like this would be my minimum if i were buying a whole new setup

A i3-2100T along with a P67 board (for future CPU upgrade) would mean that you would have to pay about 100 extra pounds for your setup

Edit: The HD6870 and the GTX460 perform very similarly. I would prefer a GTX460 because i fold, but for gaming, i would buy the cheapest between the two

Yeah, you're right. I best get a proper PSU lol. Looking further down all the reviews were like, "this blew up". lol

And yeah, I want a gtx 460, you can get them for about £95 on ebay I found.

A p67 and I3 2100 just seems out of my budget. I'd rather by a new computer in a couple of years than have upgradability on this budget.

The one in the sig rig of the poster above might work out well
http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=880G%20Pro3

You can check this link for a PSU reccomendation list: http://www.overclock.net/power-suppl...-supplies.html

And this one for better OC boards: http://www.overclock.net/amd-motherb...tion-list.html

The problem with a budget board when you do some OC is that the VRM/MOSFET area may be of poor quality, and not cooled, wich means that putting volts and frequency to the CPU may translate in dead boards or/and fire hazzard

Thanks for everything. I think I'll get the ASUS M4N68T-M LE V2 as it's reviewed quite well.

I found videos on youtube of that mobo with the x3 450/455 playing black ops on max at 40-50 fps with the fourth core unlocked. So it seems good and more importantly affordable.

But you're definitely right, I need a better psu. Thanks for the links as well.
