Core i7 920 Bottlenecked?

Thread Starter
Hey folks, long time lurker, think this is my 2nd post.

I've been tinkering with my system trying to squeeze every drop of performance that I can from it.

I run an Intel Core i7 920 @3.6Ghz, 12gb ddr3-1333 ram 3x4gb sticks (if need more info like timing and stuff I will update when I get home), trifire 5770s from sapphire.

The video cards are stock (850Mhz/1200Mhz) I can't overclock them since I get screen flickering from multi-monitor display, I run 3 displays and click on eyefinity when I feel like it, other times I just keep it to the middle monitor. I am sure it is simple to fix via the bios but I just haven't looked at it yet.

Anyways I am wondering if my cpu is bottlenecking since I am running three video cards. If it is should I try to push the overclock further?

I am on air cooling with a CORSAIR CAFA50 120mm CPU Cooler. My room is also at a constant 21 C because of my brother's asthma. I also run the Rosewill ARMOR Gaming ATX Mid Tower the one that has all the mesh and umpteen fans in it. Full Prime95 load my cpus huddle around 60C never really getting hotter than 65-70. In gaming load they never break 60.

Thanks folks

No they aren't being bottlenecked - CF 5770's is about equal to a 5870, so even with quad 5770's you would have CF 5870's? - 12GB of memory is hard on the internal memory controller for overclocking, and being at 1333mhz you're being limited in what you can push your o/c to.

Thanks, appleg33k85! +Rep

I am not all too interested in overclocking much more than that if I am not bottlenecking. Good now I feel better about the system.

Thanks again

yeah it would be hard to bottleneck any Core i7 overclocked to more than 3ghz...
Then again it's based on the game itself and resolution...
You should be more than good with that setup!

I have a i7 920 in one of my systems and I dont see you bottlenecking because of your video cards. Best thing I can suggest is make sure your drivers and bios are all up to date. If you do want to overclock your CPU more, I would recommend getting a better heatsink for it. Your temperatures are good ATM, but that can easily change if you overclock much more.

Hey guys thanks for all the responses! I have a couple of quick questions still!

Say I wanted to overclock further, what kind of cooler would you recommend? Would I have to make the leap into liquid cooling?

Along the same lines should I upgrade my ram's speed? It is 1333 right now 12gb 3 sticks of 4. If I had to upgrade the speed should I dial it back to 6gb? I picked up the 12gb module since newegg had it on sale for the same price as a replacement 6gb module that I had to do a month or so ago since one of my older sticks from my 6gb blew out.

Depends on what you want to do...

If you want to stick with air and have room in your case you could get a Noctua NH-D14, or a Thermalright Silver Arrow. They are huge though and RAM heatsinks have to be small. They make other variants of these now that fit better and are a little easier to fit in a case.

The closed loop no-maintenance liquid cooled systems do work, but are expensive. They are nice to work with if you are tinkering with your system a lot.

If you want to venture into liquid cooling there are many preset kits on the market these days and the only limiting factor is the depth of your wallet. You can go from basic and cheapish to expensive and very top notch in no time flat. I suggest you do your homework before just hopping into liquid cooling, mostly because there is so much you can do. You can make a very nice system that doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg and have excellent cooling as well.

Stick with the RAM you have and overclock it.

i read in maximum pc or something of that nature that a cheap water cooler isnt as good as a decent air cooled heatsink. I have never used water cooling so i wouldn't know, but i recently got the thermaltake frio, it keeps my temps down and is fairly cheap. i also have a i7 920 at 3.67Ghz and with prime 95 on for half an hour the highest i get is 70C(which is what i got at stock speeds with a stock HSF). Finally, i dont think theres any program out there that can use 100% of any i7 :] Gl

Your not bottlenecked. Your even less so as Tri-Fire won't scale 100% across three cards.

It could be worse. You could be running six 2Gb sticks, or have Quadfire, or be running at stock lol.

OT: Genuine question; do you notice any serious problems with three 5770's in-game? Or is it generally smooth?

Thanks ShortAlieN! I will definitely research before I make the leap into unfamiliar waters. (Ha! no pun intended ) I'll look about tweaking my ram and see what happens. I'm now curious to see how far I can push the system as I've got it now.

For me it is pretty smooth, on catalyst 11.7. Some older games need a little coddling and they generally won't like it when you try to eyefinity them but for the most part they fall in line.

However I am no longer trifire 5770 My oldest card of the three bit the dust yesterday. It was running around 90C the last couple of days even when I upped the fan to 100%. I took it apart clean/reapplied thermal paste and it behaved for a bit. Then yesterday I moved my system so it would get more air and be in line to get hit by my AC and ran the benchmark again. The card went from 50C to 98C in about 15 seconds and forced a system shutdown. The card died and now the middle card is spiking in temp, I think it took it down with it. I thought it was my mobo so I hooked the cards up in my brother's system and it's doing the same thing... so yea

I'm thinking of getting a 560Ti I've been ATI for years but I think it's time to try the "other guys". Also I can't stand running a single 5770, my performance isn't even 40% of what it used to be...
