Laptop for College

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I'm going to college next year as an ECE (Electrical & Computer Engineering) major. I'm currently in the market for a laptop. I will be bringing my sig rig, so that can do all the heavy number crunching, so I don't need this to be a desktop replacement. This will be for note taking, browsing, paper writing, and when I need to work on projects outside of my dorm room. I will not be using this for gaming, thats what the sig rig is for. I'm thinking about 15" screen, and an i5 processor. I've been looking at Dell XPS 15s, but I'm sure there are better options available. I'm very new to the laptop market, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot!

EDIT: Budget is right around $1000

Staying away from Macs, since I'm probably going to be running Linux on this. Not okay with Macs prices either.

EDIT: And the engineering dept. recommends Windows, since most of their software runs on windows. It would be a waste to buy a mac and not run OSX at all (even though OSX feels too childish for me to use). Hence the reason I will be dual booting linux and windows.

Well, you said $1000-$1500, and a macbook pro fits in that price range... Oh wait, you changed OP. Can't comment on windows laptops. Every one I've ever touched feels like crap compared to my macbook. inb4applehate....

Or you can buy this cheapish laptop I bought for college. I'll be only using it to type up essays and browse the web as well:

I have been eyeing up the Vaios C series as well as the XPS.
Can anyone speak for either of these?

Don't know about your local prices but I highly recommend Studio XPS. I own a Dell Studio 17 1735 and my coursemate has an XPS and both are pleased with Dell. Studio XPS has style and good visuals with excellent durability. Most importantly good specs when needed.
