6870 overheating!

So i was getting higher temps then i liked so i went to remove the stock thermal paste and put some arctic silver on. Inside the paste was smeared all over like wayy too much. But, while removing the screws that tighten the heat sink on the back of the card. One broke inside the heatsink. Now as soon as i start a graphics card test the temp flys up to 90 degrees at stock voltage i mean like from 50ish to 90 in like 3 to 5 seconds.

My question is did i not put enough paste or is the one screws tension missing keeping the heatsink from making enough connection.

Is there anything i can do besides getting an aftermarket cooler?

Or does the paste just need time to settle?

You shouldn't need very much thermal paste for a 6870, so I'm guessing there isn't enough pressure because of the broken screw, which would be a bummer. frown.gif

Probably there isn't enough tension between the core and the cooler. I suggest to take it apart and see what you can do. Maybe get another screw from a shop. The paste doesn't need to settle like that if your temps are at idle 90'c.

i recommened you get a new shroud/heatsink or get a better aftermarker cooler all together these cards are known to run hot under load. Here is a link to a great cooler that i have used in the past on my gtx 470 and this thing dropped my temps by 30c it is rather large but runs silent make sure you have a big case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186043&cm_re=arctic_cooling_xtreme-_-35-186-043-_-Product

Could you get a picture of that screw? One solution might be to drill it out if it's possible or another one is to get a used reference cooler- doesn't cost much. Or the best one is to get an aftermarket cooler, such as tokoam suggested. 105'c is maximum for 6870 but i would consider safe is under 90'c. What are your fan settings?
