How would you go about upgrading these PCs?

post #1 of 4
Thread Starter
These are my girlfriend and my PC's, we're looking to upgrade them but I'm not sure how to get the best bang for the buck - GPU or CPU+ram.

Q9550 @3.5ghz / 4gig ram / 4890

E8400 @ 3.0ghz / 2gig ram / 4850

We play games together, currently EVE, some WOW, I tend to play more demanding games so I tend to have newer bits and give her my older stuff. I'll be playing BC3 and maybe guildwars2 when they come out.

I've been toying with the idea of getting a new GPU and giving her the 4890, but will my CPU hamstring a nice 6950/560TI?

Any suggestions very welcome

4890--->6950/gtx 560ti
2gb ram---->4gb+ ram, 6850, e8400 might bottleneck a more powerful card

If you can find more DDR2 for cheap, just upgrade the memory and OC the snot out of the processors.

If not, sell the core components and replace them with an AM3+ or LGA-1155 DDR3 setup.

Buddy of mine was upgrading a similar system a few days ago and we came to the conclusion he was better off gutting his system and building a new one, mostly because DDR3 is half the price of DDR2 at this point.

On the GPU side of things, your system is plenty good enough to make use of something better, especially if you OC the CPU a bit more.
