This is ONLY if the PSU IEC cable is attached to a wall outlet. I ALWAYS make sure the PC is still plugged into the wall for this very reason. BUT I make dam sure the PSU mains rocker switch is in the off position and if it's a prefab special with no mains disconnect it's a no go and you HAVE TO unplug it from the wall.

The truth is if your building or working on computers you need a grounded static mat and grounded wristband.

Good notes for all,

My agreement with a post or 2 mentioned already... mobo toasted... perhaps ram toasted as well... Not saying it is/isn't an issue, but it seems the most common "non working component" is the mobo. If there's warranty work, I'll fight that it was the tech centre's fault for failing.

I'm working in a technical field, mostly hardware/swap/repair. I always ground myself before touching anything. A. I value my job, B. Living outside of a house fails to be appealing in any sense...

I haven't heard one mention of ESD here on these forums even from 10k plus posters that are supposed to be PC building Gurus. I seriously wonder how much of the screwy damaged hardware people come here for help on has been damaged from ESD. I'd bet it's a seriously high percentage considering not one even considers ESD.
