Yes, they are similar games
No, they are not the same game

DotA2 is exactly that, DotA redone, and that is why I will not be playing it. I do not want DotA. To the average player they are the same game, but mechanics are very very different in the two games.

I am sure that LoL will loose players over to DotA, but LoL isn't going anywhere.

LOL Is dead once Dota comes out. Not to say it will completely go away, but I can tell you I will never touch LOL once Dota is around, and many LOL friends feel the same way.

LOL is a huge horrible time sink to get competitive. tier 3 rune page costs over 7k IP, not to mention all new Riot heroes cost 6.3k it seems.

DoTA on the other hand will have all heros available, and will be FAR better balanced. I think it's very obvious that LOL has released quite a few imba heroes only to nerf them a month or so later after the initial rush to get the hero.

If I paid for every Riot hero, it would cost 200 around dollars. Dota will be 40 or 50, one time cost.

LoL will still have a much larger player base. Neither the original DotA or HoN came even remotely close to having the same following in their times. The stream for the LoL season 1 tournament had over 200,000 viewers at quite a few points. No other game in general has even come close to that in the US. I think the EVO fighting tournament had around 15,000 at its best points. People don't realize how popular LoL actually is. HoN will die, not LoL.

On another point, you must not have played LoL recently. The past few heroes have all been underpowered according to most people.

LoL is a casual game, DotA 2 probably won't be.

Casual players will flock to LoL like they do to Frontierville and Call of Duty, the serious gamers will go to DotA 2.

This is Riot trying to say "OUR GAME IS SRS TOO!!".

See, that's where you're wrong. DotA still has the largest player base over both of these games. There are 7-11 million DotA players outside of China. Now you can add another 7-11 million who play in China where the competition is the fiercest. Remember 15,000,000 does not mean playing, but registered, it's a free game anyone can register. I myself have five accounts in LoL, do I play anymore? Not a chance . . .
You're correct on LoL surviving, they developed a great casual game for new people to join and have an easy start, but do not underestimate Valve. I would think just because it's Valve many people who've never tried the MOBA genre will play because they trust the company.

-edit-
Not to call him out, but I think Zulli85 can also add a bit more on the player base of DotA better than I.

Sadly I wish I could say its just that. its possibly just me and my mate but the one bug I hate is when the mouse just refuses to move your character clicking etc. does nothing. hot keys all work fine and you can chat etc.. but moving is just a no no, usually only happens at the start of the game. has only happened 3 times. twice at the start then for no reason at all.. just wouldn't move. (I would love to blame my connection.. but its not that :-/ )

Baahh.. I think its just bad experience on my end.

I wonder if anyone in the UK on OCN is considering attempting the WCG (or whatever its called) league/tourney going on in september?

FYI you are completely wrong. DotA has been going strong, especially internationally for YEARS longer than LoL has even been available. It is especially huge in China and I know that the fanbase worldwide is anxious to see it for the first time this Wednesday at Gamescon. I wouldn't be surprised if well over 200k people tune in to watch it this week. I have a feeling the numbers are going to be huge.

I agree with pretty much everything that you said. There aren't any concrete stats of the number of DotA players but I've seen it estimated at ~20 million worldwide.

A: I can only give estimates based on getdota.com usage, because I can't track ingame downloads or fansites or downloads from China. It is roughly estimated (based on the statistics from popular Chinese sites) that the Chinese DotA audience is about 40-50% of the worldwide audience. Not counting China, the playerbase is estimated to be somewhere between 7-11 million. I expect the audience to grow even more in the not too distant future.

IceFrog is the lead developer of DotA and DotA 2 (I know you know this Clorox) and this quote is from April 2010.

I've never watched MOBA esports because I don't consider it that entertaining. Same deal with FPS games. Fighting games on the other hand are a blast to watch.
