SSD worth doing raid?

Thread Starter
I will be updating my computer pretty soon and I was debating on either raptors in raid 0, SSD drive, or even SSD raid 0...is SSD raid really worth it if i have the money or is it better to just use one SSD and put the money into something else. And if i do decide to do that how important is a raid controller? Is the one built into the mobo good enough to run raid 0 or is a controller a must to see the performance gains. This is the SSD I was looking at to run raid 0 with 2 of them (feel free to suggest better ones if you feel there are better ones around that price) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227729
and this is the MOBO i will be getting (same goes here) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813188073

If you put SSD's in RAID, I believe you lose TRIM.

To be honest, I don't see the sense in it myself. The increase in performance is so large going from a traditional drive to an SSD and is way more than you'll see going from a single SSD to 2 in RAID.

I would put your OS and larger apps on the SSD and then you can RAID a couple of nice 1+TB HDD's for quick R/W times on data.

Also, I couldn't get your second link to work. It took me to the same SSD as the first.

Just my 2c worth...hope it helps,

Rich

Try it now, must not have copied the link right...should be workin now....so you think just one larger SSD instead of doing a raid? And is taht much faster than 2 raptors in raid 0?

It works now.

You really don't need more than 120GB for your system drive. I have Windows 7 and my larger photo editing software on mine along with Office, and a few other things. I still have 82/111GB free. Of course, I am not a gamer, so yours might have more on it.

An SSD will be faster than Raptor's in RAID if it's performing right. You'd have to search, but I know there's benchmarks showing the comparison. Here's one:

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...hdd-comparison

Since there's no moving parts, an SSD's seek/access time is cut way down.

As far as the SSD you linked, I really have no opinion on. I did quite a bit of research before buying mine and went with Intel, since it seemed to be generally agreed upon as one of, if not the most reliable brand. I read a lot about this one or that one having major issues, but you tend to see a lot of that type of reporting on a tech forum. Only time will tell...

Well I am a gamer, thats what I was worried about is running out of space. 120 would be cutting it pretty close. I was looking at 240 GB drives and its about the same cost as getting 2 120s...so wouldnt it be worth it to just go ahead and get the 2 and put them into a raid?

SSD's in Raid work

You loose TRIM, but "garbage collection" still works in Raid, so get SSD's that support that if you want to put them in Raid.

Any suggestions on which SSD to get? 120GB drives would be preferable. And do i need to get a raid controller or will my mobo be good enough to do it? (link to it on my first post)

Personally I would go with 1 big ssd drive and then a 1tb drive for other stuff. I have done the whole raid thing with my ssd's and honestly I think that running a single makes my os more responsive vs raid. Another thing is when running raid you have to wait on the raid bios to boot so it takes a few extra seconds to boot your pc when running raid.

Again, if you go RAID, you lose TRIM.

You might see if some gamers add their opinions here, but from what I've read, 120GB is plenty. If you're uncomfortable with that, I would get one larger one over a smaller one. The increase, if any, from putting them in an array would not really be that great.

The loss of TRIM would generally make it degrade faster over time from what I have read and would make it not worth it for RAID as the other person has said if you are unsure go with the larger drive IMO, that's what I did I thought about RAIDing 2x 64GB but decided on a single 128GB instead.
