The campaign will definitely help you come up with tactics. I'm about 60% done with it at this point and I think its been the greatest tool for learning how to handle situations in pvp matches.

The skirmish mode is also quite handy to learn the different modes of play.

The main thing for me to grasp at first was remembering you can issue commands between path points. Not just on point a and point b.
And the check command has saved my ass more than a few times.

agreed

BTW: if you press "V" you can see the range of your units, specially usefull for the shotgunner.

you can also add commands to the "wait time line" making it very usefull to controll two doorways on one room for example.

Probably goes without saying, but don't rush your turns. I like to plan what I think my opponent will do before I plan my own moves. Then plan again as necessary. Sometimes things go well, sometimes they don't. But taking your time and having things just the way you want them is a big key to success.

What does the check do? That V tip will be useful as well. I had figured out placing commands between path lines and during a wait.

Yesterday I had one of my units come out of a room to get cover behind a box which was in the middle of the room but there was a sniper in the distance. I issued a duck command halfway through his run to interrupt the snipers aim, got to cover then poped up and took him out.

One thing to be careful of is there is a penalty for changing stance going into combat, it didn't really matter in that situation because you had the cover and you got line of sight faster but just be aware of that for multiplayer

Check tells your unit to look in the area you tell him to for a very brief moment.

When you issue the check command, drag the little white crosshair out into the area you want them to check. when they get to that point on the path, they'll look in that direction for a split second, and then continue on their way.

As an example in my last match I knew BreakDown's grenadier went either north or south. When I got to the open area I ordered my shotgunner to check the north position but continue his path south.
If his grenadier was north I would have popped him before heading south on the map. As it turns out, he was south and I got him anyway.

Good game btw, BreakDown!

exactly, you have to be careful, sometimes an easy kill can bite your *** because you didnt take into account that penalty.

if a enemy unit is behind cover while you are ducked behind cover, popping out to kill him is a bad idea, he will always get you first because you are changing stance.

a good way to avoid this, is to create a distraction, make another of your units walk into his line of sight for just a second and return him into cover, at this time, when the enemy has just spotted your second unit, you change stance on the first unit behind cover. since the enemy is focused on another unit you will most likely take him out.

this "distraction" technique is quite tricky, im currently exploring it and it has saved me from tight spots, although its hard to time it correctly.

exactly, check will just make your unit look in another direction for a very brief period of time.

on the other hand, when walking its quicker to just add a waypoint looking to where you want to look than using the "check" command.

if you are still in place, its better to use a "wait time line" and add aiming directions than the "check" command since you can control better how much time your unit will look in the desired direction.

so there is no real reason to actually use check IMO.

use it to get familiar with its uses and what it does, but then just use the "alternative" methods since they are better.

@blampars ill have my revenge

Ok so I did understand what it did, I didn't realize there was a command for it. I would have checked the way breakdown explained it or draw out the timeline and put a wait in that way. Thanks for clearing it up!

To add in one more thing.

When you need to run, and fast, engage Continue on Sight! This is a pretty important, and don't forget to set Engage on Sight again
