Are my speakers worth getting a sound card?

Thread Starter
I was thinking of getting the Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Champion sound card with the gaming drive. But people tell me my speakers suck, and its not worth getting a new sound card because I won't notice the difference on these crap speakers. I mean, it was the best I could afford at the time. Should I kick the x-fi titanium fatal1ty off my wish list?

Oh, forgot.. I have the Logitech Z506

The thing you don't want to encounter is diminishing return here, unless you plan on getting better speakers in the near future. Your speakers aren't bad. By the average audiophiles perspective, there are many better sets that can be had for the money. Logitech's are not bad speakers, but they are not for the person looking to get the best bang for their buck, or not for the person keen on hearing every bit of detail.
Getting something with a built in amp like on of the xonar essence cards in the sub 100 dollar price range would probably net you slightly better sound quality without breaking the bank. My xonar essence stx, made my logitech x-540's sound far better, but they are not at all comparable to the difference I experienced with my audiotechnica a700's or m50's. Its all up to you and how much you want to spend. Get an inexpensive sound card, and if you enjoy the better sound quality you get out of it, and decide you want something better, look into getting a nice 2.1 speaker set. Everyone has to start somewhere, and if you really enjoy getting everything out of your music, you'll eventually get the itch to upgrade and enjoy the difference. For right now, enjoy what you have and try not to be put down by all of the logitech-crap spewing. They are not an audiophile-grade company, and they shouldn't be thought of as such. Their speakers are great for things like lan parties, and trying to enjoy 5.1 sound on a small budget. TL;dr, their speakers are not the best, but they aren't crap. Enjoy em while you've got em.

I just wanted it for gaming... I want a little extra umph out of my sound, so I might look into the xonar series. But, if I get this job I've been waiting for, I'll definitely get new speakers.

Meh. If you're serious about getting good audio, ditch the Logitech pc-speakers. Z506's put out decent sound, so long as you haven't damaged them. I was fairly happy with my set before they suffered premature cable rot. But they distorted really easily, the volume potentiometer was also useless for the first 50% of travel.

If you're serious and on a budget, browse Craigslist and used for speakers and receivers/amps. Sometimes you get mega lucky. I had a set of 5.1 speakers on hand from a home-theater unit...and grabbed a used receiver and a Kenwood sub for $50USD.

On a budget you will not find a good receiver new at the bottom end. See the attached image, measured at the headphone output on the receiver. To get a new receiver with a THD close to what I can get, I'd need to spend $500+ on the receiver alone.

Now that I think of it... These speakers are alright, a $100 sound card should be fine for it.

The sound card should deliver just that for you. It should be louder and clearer..to an extent. It should improve upon whats already there.
