best gaming GPU atm i think is the new HD 6990m,

Now for a gaming laptop, well it depends on ur price range, weight requirements etc.

Plus, are you really sure u want a laptop for gaming (since u mentioned gaming GPU) since PC GPUs are much stronger,

However if u have no option, i'd advice taking a look at Origin laptops, their probably the best, u can customize them to ur specifications, everything from design to internal parts,

Another company is Sager notebooks, they also have excellent gaming laptops quite decently priced, also having a IC diamond cooler which should help on your heating problems (Even without it, i heard their laptops rarely suffer from heating problems)

However, for $1100, u might not be able to get them, they range from $1500-2100 unfortunately,

Although the HP Pavilion dv6-6017tx is around that much money, it is also pretty damn good for a laptop, has a HD 6770m, that is around the Nvidia GT555m in turns of power, 15.7inchs, i7 2nd generation sandy bridge processor aswell, 4gigs RAM and has beats audio too, so you could go for that

i agree without a doubt that pc's are vastly superior to laptops, and i was just about to pull the trigger and order all the parts to my brand new pc tower yesturday. however, i am going to be traveling and need a laptop to bring with me on a big business trip... so i had to revamp what i was going to do. The desktop just wont be an option at the moment. I could wait one more month and increase my budget on the laptop, but what kind of performance increase would i see for the 1500-2000 with the origin pc // sager notebooks over a 1100 dollar range one?

also, my knowledge of laptop tech is quite limited, so fill me in as much as possible.

** what is "IC diamond cooler" that you mentioned?

I'll also give dell a look at. ty.

IC diamond cooler is something that would help cool the laptop under stressful situations such as overclocking or prolonged use without shutting down, as u would have guessed, alot of laptops suffer from heating issues, well not sager, they are known for good cooling, having seperate fans for both GPU and CPU,

So in the end it is up to u, do u use the laptop for those kind of situations, also its just $40, out of 1500, so its not that bad,

Also, if i may make a suggestion when getting a laptop, get a RAID 0 SSD around 40gb to 128gb, put ur OS on it, trust me, the booting speed and general use speed is MUCH faster, also it takes very little battery life, has no moving parts so it wont get spoiled as easily , and u dont need to defrag it either!!

Anyway, the reason i linked those to companies since they have a vast range of laptop customizations along with different laptops, so u can browse and explore, find the right model and config u want smile.gif

also, on the note of Dell, they have good machines, good customer service or so i heard, but their GPU options are very very lacking unfortunately, u cannot be a gamer with their laptops

ssd's would add a lot to the cost though.

--im looking at the sager site, this is what they say "IC Diamond Thermal Compound - CPU + GPU [+$40.00] " so its just better thermal paste for 40 dollars?

--how advanced is the 6990M gpu in comparison to other laptop cards?

no no, RAID is a like certain memory setting, raid 0 offers fast speeds, and a 40gb SSD wont rlly cost all that much, i think, although i only think origin has that option
