Weak Power Supply

post #1 of 7

What would happen to my friend's computer if it ran on a 375 watt power supply? Apparently he's running a 450 GTS which is recommended to recieve 400 watts, although his power supply only gives 375 watts. What would happen to his computer? It seemed to be running alright for awhile; a few months.

The psu should cut out if it gets overloaded. It might be able to go past the labeled wattage. But if its a cheap unit that has no overload protection it could fail and damage his hardware.

nvidia will be covering them selves with the 400 watt, What is the systems cpu?

He says "It's an Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Huo CPU E4600 @ 2.40ghz (2 CPUs)" :3 Apparently his gpu is failing, and he's sometimes unable to turn off his computer or even update his drivers. Maybe it has something to do with his Power supply?

Memtest 86+ and run a S.M.A.R.T. test.

Not sure if he could run those programs, or even install them. His computer is barely able to run youtube videos anymore. D;

Sounds more like a virus/spyware problem. Whens the last time he's reformatted his computer?

By any chance can you get a picture of the specs of his PSU label?

Well, normally Avast would be able to handle it. And you'd normally get viruses from excepting files or clicking on ads. He doesn't do that. He's more of a guy who messes around with animating tools, visit newgrounds for animations, and then look at youtube stuff. He also ran a virus check too. ;o He's also unable to get his psu label.
