[G] Spider Silk and Goat Milk Could Make Human Skin Bulletproof - Page 6

Why not combine spider silk with human skin? ... Theoretically, though, the spider silk protein could take the place of keratin which is responsible for the toughness of human skin.
(from the source)

When I read this I immediately saw the crysis 'maximum defence' clip in my mind

Also, I already read about this a few years ago that it would one day be a possibility, just to see that happen and be able to think back to then is quite amazing. And indeed it isn't that spectacular of a defence, yet.. I still think there's a huge area of improvement, in the clip (yes I speak Dutch) he talks about the different layering combinations he tried. And so it might be possible to weave this into other things to increase the strength of it.

Im pretty sure i heard someone talk about a similar(If not the same) project, on Discovery Channel one or two years ago? Except that Goat milk detail. That's completely new to me.

Apparently, you don’t need Kevlar to stop bullets. Human skin combined with spider silk-infused goat milk can do the job just as well. Dutch scientists recently brought this combination to life, pushing the limits of science. The project is called “2.6 g 329m/s†which is the standard weight and velocity that a Type 1 bulletproof vest can protect against.

Spider silk might not seem like much, but it’s the toughest of all the silks in existence. Its many times stronger than steel, and it’s the toughest natural protein fiber. With that much strength, spider silk is capable of a great many things. And when woven together, it could even stop bullets.
Now what are the Dutch famous for ... lol

Seiously this looks awesome I want some once it has been perfected.

I have a bullet proof plan, do not enter said battlefield, no bullets can hit you then...

Win!

Interesting.

Watching that video, the impact of the bullet still looks worse than impacts on bulletproof vests. Not that it doesn't hurt to get shot while wearing a bulletproof vest, but with fewer layers between the bullet and the skin, and without the barrier being relatively inelastic, I could see lots of internal damage and pain--more than a standard bulletproof vest.

But it's definitely interesting. I wonder how much more of the material it would take to stop a full-speed bullet, and be on-par with current bulletproof vests in terms of weight, mass, etc.

Seems great. Something easily accessible that can resist a bullets pressure at high speed.

This isn't by any means to be used as a bulletproof vest on its own, but would be an addition to the vest to keep them in good shape for longer.

So the red indicates where the bullet comes from.
You've got your blue cotton or teflon cover.
Then your spider silk in pink which wraps around the bullet and provides drag.
In yellow a resistive material such as a foam or rubber.
Grey would be your ceramic or kevlar plate to resist the material and then some more resistive material to soften impact.

No I've got no idea how bulletproof vests actually work, but I imagine it's something like that and that is how this new material could be implemented. In any case, it's going to make the bullet easier to retrieve from the person who's been hit, because if this stuff is what it says it is, then you should be able to pull it out with the vest.
