Midrange MSI AM3+ motherboard 990XA-GD55 spotted on Chinese website

Looks like it uses the same higher end 8+2 phase VRM setup as the GD65 and the GD80 - complete with the DrMOS setup. The layout and features seem ideal for a 990X chipset board. 6 SATA ports... not too many, but that puts it in line with the 990XA-UD3 (not the M5A99X EVO though, which has two more SATA ports). The second PCI-E slot appears from the back to be wired for 16X, however as with all 990X it only supports 8x-8x. the same is true on the 970A-G45 which is 16x-4x.
None of the board heatsinks are on, and you can see that there is thermal pad gunk on the VRMs and chipset area, so they are definitely supposed to be heatsinked. A couple of pictures show the heatsinks on; the one over the VRMs is fairly beefy. Note the use of an AM3-style CPU heatsink retention bracket unlike the split retention bracket found on most other AM3+ boards.
The VRMs should hold up during most aircooling situation but definitely don't use them in a watercooling or 1.6V+ or extreme cooling situation... DrMOS transistors are usually more fragile than regular high quality low RDS (on) transistors.

The real question is... will it be available here in N. America and comparable markets for the right price?
The 990XA-UD3 currently holds the best price point for 990X chipset board at $140 shipped in the US (sometimes dipping down to as low as $100, like it recently did in Canada) - it runs well with the new F4E BIOS, supporting my x6 at 4Ghz CPU/3Ghz NB, and 4 DIMMs of DDR3-1600. Way down there we have the 970 Extreme4 as well, supporting similar features incl. SLI and 8x-8x CrossfireX (it is likely a rebranded 990X at lower cost), but with a lower end 4+1 power phase that won't provide for as stable current delivery on the top end 8 core processors. I wonder where the 990XA-GD55 will hit. The 990FXA-GD65 hits a decent $160 price point close to the M5A99X EVO.... I am thinking if MSI prices this board right it will go head to head with the GA-990XA-UD3. I likely won't be suggesting it often however unless the price actually ends up lower than the GA-990XA-UD3. I have had a pretty good experience on the GA-990XA so far.

So what board would you recommend for water cooling and 1.6v?

About time MSI learns to make decent power phases.

For these situations or other extreme cooling/voltage situations, you'll want to look at a board that has higher quality transistors of the usual 2 MOSFET + driver(s) design (specifically not DrMOS, which though efficient are rather fragile for such purposes - MSI or not). Gigabyte's UD3 line (not UD5 or UD7 line) serves well for one, and so does the ASUS Sabertooth and Crosshair V Formula. Not that the 990XA-GD55 will be bad for the majority of users of the board.

So dr.mos for effecient/ decent overclocks.
Asus 2 phase driver for extreme overclocks.
But dont all motherboard makers have dr.mos for vrms??

Edit: nowadays

oh no why did they have to go with poo colored pcb

I think you should do some more research on drmos before you just shoot them down like that.

My 8 phase gd80 held up to 1.8v just fine under dice, and it uses drmos. Gigabyte swears by them too. Just sayin. Maybe you are right, but to me they seem fine.

Just what I've been hearing from some trustworthy sources concerning DrMOS, but an interesting note you have definitely. Perhaps it is specific between older and newer DrMOS.... but it seems even a lot of the new ones (esp. on the Intel side) are unable to hold their own.

they are in two different price categories, it is kinda hard to compare them.
