Bad mobo or bad memory?

Thread Starter
I had trouble setting my new Corsair Vengeance 8GB kit to 1600mhz(via xmp) in my Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3 motherboard, so decided to check both memory sticks out.

Stick 1 would only work in the left 2 memory slots on my board. Stick 2 however would work in all 4 memory slots.

Why would one stick work in all 4 slots just fine but the other only work the right way in 2 slots?

Does this mean the stick of memory is bad, or the motherboard is bad?

yep!

I tried the first stick out and went from right to left. The first 2 slots gave me errors and reverted the memory back to 1333mhz. The last 2 slots booted up with it fine.

Then I took the second stick and repeated the process. This time, it worked in all 4 slots.

Just to make sure, I double checked it. Ran them both through again with same results.

One stick could be stronger than the other (very common, even in so called matched pairs), or have a differen SPD/XMP profile that makes the slight difference in timings between channels significant enough to prevent proper operation.

Possibly neither.

I would try manually inputting timings and voltages and avoiding the use of the XMP profile.

Cool, so do you think if anything the memory stick would be bad? It would suck having to replace the motherboard because I did a sweet 5 hour wire management job.
