Revive GTX 295 by baking? / Fix log

Thread Starter
Hi, I have just recieved a faulty 295 that I intend to fix, if this is not possible to fix it will make a loveley ornament . . .

So I install it and fire up the pc, the found new hardware wizard appears and the devices are listed as "standard pci bridge" or something, no mention of the 295

So far I have removed the sli ribbon and replced it with no effect.

When it is running, there is only one LED (green) on the master card, should there also ba a blue one on the slave card?

The fact that not even one of the cards are recognised points to the fault being in the master card so I should focus my efforts on that first.

Is the only option to bake it then?

At my disposal I also have a heat gun, can that be used instead?

And can I just disconnect the fan and let it "bake" itself ?

Can someone tell me what 'baking' is? What I'm thinking of isn't something that you would be doing to a GFX Card... Sorry for not helping
post #3 of 21

Heating up the card until the solder holding the components on softens. This can sometimes fix connection problems caused by bad solder joints.

Edit: OP, have you tried installing the drivers for it?

Well I've fixed a 9800 GT by baking it for 10 minutes at 385F. Make sure you pre-heat the oven before you try though, and use the proper method of GPU facing down and the card being up on small foil balls. Not sure if my punctuation is correct, my brain is not working 100% atm.

Okay, what about the plastic pci-e power connector?

I have removed everything that can be, so do I just. . .

1. Preheat oven to 200 degrees celcius

2. prepare baking tray with tin foil

3. make 4 balls of foil per card and rest cards on baking tray

4. bake for 11 mins

5. wait ?

if so I will preheat the oven . . .

10 minutes should be fine. After 10 minutes remove the card from oven and let it cool off for about an hour before assembly.
