[BBC] Why spend £1000 on headphones?

An interesting article that approaches the increasing value of the premium headphone market and looks at the idea of both high quality sound, but also marketing to the fashion sector. It gives a good unbiased look at some of the technologies and criticisms with low quality audio and things such as noise cancelling. The second video is also similar.

It's great to see the BBC covering lots of aspects of technology and not shying away from the technical aspects. This is why I <3 them

Quote:
Consumers are spending more than ever before on headphones. But what makes premium audio so expensive and does spending so much money make much of a difference?

And people are spending more and more money on each pair. According to market analyst NPD, headphones costing $100 (£61) or more went from around 2% of the headphone market in 2009 to 3.5% in 2010, with the average buyer replacing them once every 14 months...

Because I want to?!

I've got 400euros costing HD650. It's about as far as I wanted to go. I tested ALOT of headphones and I chose the HD650 ... before seeing that price ticket attached. And I can only say: they are the most detailed sounding cans I've ever heard. After that I spent even more on DIY amps and DACs, and yet I've never hear anything better anywhere.

I couldn't go back to anything less because the difference is very noticeable to me.

It's amazing.

Not saying that I can justify spending 24k on an Orpheus set.

Yeah, what they say is true. You cannot ever feel the full force of high end equipment unless you have the perfect context (in this case the room). Still, I want an echoless room in my house

As you march up the tiers in the headphone world, the sooner you'll understand that a perfect sound setup is in the sum of its parts. An expensive pair of cans means nothing if you cannot amp it with the right equipment, and feed it from the best audio source. Also, the environment has to do with the consistency of sound quality especially if you're gonna use speakers.

That's why I'm used to mid-fi gear to avoid all that lol. My $200 Sennheiser HD25-1 II is enough for now.

I think beats was brought up to emphasise not only the desire for "higher" quality audio, but also the market is aesthetics and branding. It's really very relevant to the article given the data on increasing expenditure.

I like the line between low end and audiophile. Why change it? They've decided to go with the marketing gimmicks and such. I don't really find the current audiophile headphones unattractive in any way. Are they trying to call those headphones ugly? I feel offended.

It's all relative. They do note they are criticised still, but when you put them side to side with bundled earphones, they are high end. As I say, it's all relative.
