The point of a headphone amp is to supply enough voltage for the headphones so they can be driven so they output their maxium sound signature. Just because a hp amp makes pair of headphones loud, do not mean those headphones are getting the voltage they need to get the most out of them.
Sure I could get my AKG 702s loud thru the hp amp on a Auzentech Bravura but the hp amp on that wasn't supplying the voltage needed for the headphones to be driven and to get the most out of the headphones. Which why you gotta pair headphones like mine with a strong headphone amp other wise they will not sound right besides them being amp pick they also needy on power. Which also why you cant look at the ohm charts that I see people some times look at and think a portable mp3 playe can handle it when it cant.
Some headphones are easier to drive then others, while other headphones req alot of power to be driven. Of course you can go deaf if you turn the volume on your hp amp all the way up.
I had a friend which thought the same way as you did and I had to sit him down and explain it to him in detail.Edited by admflameberg - 8/17/11 at 1:27am
